K-Beach Elementary
A Message from Mrs. Van Slyke
Dear Parents and Guardians,
If you are new to the K-Beach community, welcome! We are glad to have you here! If you are a returning member of the herd, we are honored to continue to partner with you in your child’s education.
It has been a great start to the school year here at K-Beach Elementary. Our students have been learning new routines and getting to know new teachers and classmates.
Thank you for the vital role you play in your child’s success at school. A few ways you can contribute to your child’s achievement are by asking your child about his/her day, having a positive attitude about learning, and reading to or with your child every night.
Thank you for all of your support at home!
Title I
This year our school did not qualify as a Title 1 school. We missed the cutoff for being a Title I school by less than one percent. This impacted our school directly by losing two teaching positions and a Title I aide.
In order for us to to qualify under this program next year, please ensure that you fill out the free and reduced lunch application. Many families are surprised to find that they do qualify! https://www.schoolcafe.com/KENAIPENINSULABOROUGHSD
The KPBSD Title I program is made available through federal grants to improve the academic achievement of students in schools of high poverty. This means that we could get additional funding to enhance your child’s educational experience here at K-Beach! These funds are allocated to our school based on economic need, which is determined through free and reduced lunch enrollments.
PBIS at K-Beach
PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is a framework for teaching, acknowledging, and rewarding positive behavior in our school. We have three school expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Students are taught respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors in the different areas of our school building.
Staff recognize students who demonstrate K-Beach’s expectations by passing out pom poms. We collect pom poms in a jar in the office. Once the jar is filled, we have a school-wide celebration!
PBIS allows our school to spend less time focusing on unexpected behaviors and more time on learning and reinforcing valuable citizenship skills.

Attendance
Many of our classes start their day with reading lessons. Being frequently tardy means your child is missing critical literacy instruction. That could have a long-term impact on their reading skills. Please help us meet our goal of improving attendance this school year!
Please see the information below provided by the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development.
Attention Volunteers
We love volunteers at K-Beach! If you are interested in volunteering at K-Beach, please complete the volunteer application at the link below. Applications must be renewed each school year, and can take up to two weeks to complete.
