MASSABESIC HIGH SCHOOL
2023-2024
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 27 - DECEMBER 1, 2023
RSU 57 & Massabesic High School
"Preparing students for success in an ever-changing world."
Welcome back from our Thanksgiving break. I hope the time with family and friends was relaxing and positive. It is important to be mindful that a return to school after several days away can be initially challenging as we resume our routines. However, I am confident we can help one another in terms of expectations and operations in our school community.
We are staring down a fairly straightforward five-day week. Included in this newsletter is the first edition of the MUSTANGS GALLOP (featured last week) - I believe this will be a great way for our community to learn about the solid teaching happening throughout our campus.
Finally, I hope you will all consider joining the throng for the annual Ugly Sweater 5K sponsored by our National Honor Society on Sunday, December 3rd (flyer below). Word on the street is that Deputy Corey is being forced to actually run it this year - if that isn't motivation to observe some high-quality comedic entertainment I don't know what is ;-)

Forest Ranger Mulcahy visits MHS!
Local forest ranger and Massabesic graduate Greg Mulcahy came to Massabesic High School to meet with any students interested in learning more about forestry and the forest ranger career. Students had the opportunity to ask questions about his role in firefighting, timber theft, and timber trespass. They were also invited to investigate his truck and examine all the tools and equipment needed for his job. Thank you to Greg for giving students the opportunity to learn about this fascinating career! (Photo and caption credit to Lori Pennell - MHS Science Teacher)
NJROTC - Coventry High School Drill Competition
WHO: The five competing high schools in the All New England Drill League of Navy JROTC. These are Massabesic High School, Dover High School (NH), Oxford High School and Quabbin Regional High School (MA) and Coventry High School (RI).
WHAT: The drill league includes four competitions every fall. This past weekend was the third competition, but Massabesic’s second. Regrettably, we could not go to the October 24th drill competition due to the Lewiston tragedy.
WHEN: Saturday, November 18th, 8 am - 1: 30 pm
WHERE: Coventry High School, Coventry, RI
WHY: To afford more than 150 motivated high school students the chance to compete and excel in a varsity sport (precision drill) and other challenging competitions such as physical fitness, academic knowledge and individual drill, practicing leadership, discipline and good sportsmanship in the process.
HOW: Strong district and school support for our program and Transportation Dept. support of our extended travel for this trip.
How we did:
Awards are given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in team competitions.
1. We didn’t place in precision drill, which admittedly takes a couple of years to build your bench because it is a varsity sport and we competed against the top three NJROTC precision drill teams in New England.
2. Our Academic Team came in second this time, very closely behind Quabbin.
3. Individual Drill Knockout - this is Simon Says for drill knowledge. Over 100 cadets participated and the last 10 standing were given medals. This is a big deal to the kids, because once you are a 4th year cadet you cannot compete in this event, and once you get a medal you likewise cannot compete again, but you can coach and cheer on your classmates in future competitions. Of the last ten cadets standing, FIVE were from our Unit and all five were 1st year cadets. They out-competed 2nd and 3rd year cadets. The other winners were from the other schools.
4. Our five winners:
Trever Kinney - freshman and 1st year cadet
Grace Shipman - freshman and 1st year cadet
Alley Heath - freshman and 1st year cadet
Guardian Boedecker - Bonny Eagle High School freshman and 1st year cadet
Aiden Parsons - Bonny Eagle High School freshman and 1st year cadet
