Decatur Virtual Weekly Update
February 6, 2025
Director's Corner
Dear Decatur Virtual Family,
We have a lot of exciting things happening in February!
CSD will have a winter break. Please plan so that you can also take a break. On February 14th any student who has completed all their work through February 21st may take a break with the rest of CSD. Those who have work to do need to come to check in during the week of February 17-21. February 13 is the end of our add/drop period. This is the last day that students can add or drop a course without penalty.
Any student with a credit recovery course that is not complete should plan to come in person the week of Winter break to work with me at 125 Electric Avenue M, W, TH, and F from 9:00 to 12:00.
On February 25th I will be a presenter at the National Digital Learning Conference in Atlanta. I will participate with leaders in digital learning from around the country in the panel discussion called Trailblazing School Leaders: Revolutionizing Equity and Choice in Education.
Please keep up with your work in February. The mid-point of the semester will be sneaking up on us soon.
Work hard,
Ms. Whatley
Behavior and Emotional Screening System (BASC-3 BESS)
Dear Parents/Guardians,
In our continuing efforts to support the well-being of all students, City Schools of Decatur (CSD)
will administer a universal screener of social, emotional & behavioral health. CSD adopted the
The Behavior Assessment for Children 3rd edition Behavior and Emotional Screening System
(BASC-3 BESS) as the universal screener for behavior.
For the 2024-25 school year, students in grades (3, 4, 6, 7, 9, and 10) will take the student self-
report of the screener at their school during the fall and spring administration dates. The Fall
administration of the BASC-3 BESS opened on October 7th and closed on November 1st. The
Spring administration of the BASC-3 BESS opens on March 3rd and will remain open through
March 28th.
Please access the Universal Social Emotional Behavior Screener Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) on the CSD website to learn more.
What are your next steps?
No action is required if you agree with your student’s participation in the screening. If you
would prefer that your student NOT participate in the universal screening, please
complete the opt-out form by clicking here or by visiting the District’s MTSS Website:
https://www.csdecatur.net/Page/5001. The deadline to opt your child out of completing the
BESS is Sunday, March 2, 2025. If you submitted an opt-out form for your student(s) prior
to the Fall 2024 administration, you do not need to submit another opt-out form.
If you would like more information, have any questions regarding the screener or screening
process, or would like to inspect the screener, please plan to attend one of the the following
Virtual Parent Information Sessions and submit Q & A questions here:
● Tuesday, February 11, 2025 9:00a - 9:30a

Counseling Corner
Dear Parents and/or Guardians,
We all share a common goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. Related to that goal, Senate Bill 401 (Erin’s Law) requires annual age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention in kindergarten through grade 9, and and HB 287 requires Human Trafficking awareness and prevention in grades 6 through 12. We use research-based programming to teach the importance of healthy relationships and its connection to personal safety by way of class discussions, student handouts, video clips and corresponding activities. The programming builds upon the curriculum used in our elementary schools. The goal is to enable students to take an active and necessary role in making healthy choices and protecting themselves from unhealthy relationships. CSD Student Support Services department reviews the programming and selects components that are appropriate for each grade band.
This spring (March, April), I will present lessons to students. If you have questions about CSD's Erin's Law and HB 287 programming, please see the Comprehensive School Counseling and Understanding Child Lures: What Do Parents Need to Know? presentation from the CSD School Safety & Security Summit held 1/27/2025. Additionally, if you would like a virtual preview of these lessons, please contact your grade level school counselor as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. Students will review what was learned in previous grade(s) and then discuss the lures in the photo below.
If you prefer that your child not participate in these lessons, please write and sign a note or send me an email indicating your preferences. Unless written documentation is received, your child will have the opportunity to participate in these prevention and safety lessons. Please contact your grade level counselor to discuss any concerns you might have.
Sincerely,
Kimberly R. Jones, EdD
