A message from the principal
I hope you all had a wonderful break and were able to spend some time with family, friends and loved ones during the Holiday season. Now that new year has arrived, things are busy once again here at CBPA. Students and teachers are back in the familiar routines of school, and learning is in full-swing again. In addition to our in-class daily learning experiences, we have many field trips and adventures taking place throughout the month of January.
Conferences are just around the corner, and the conference schedule is open. You can sign up with your child's teacher at www.myconferencetime.com/cbpa. If you have questions regarding conference sign-up, please reach out to your child's teacher. We are looking forward to discussing your child's progress with you!
This past week was Winter Transportation Safety Week. Please take a few minutes to discuss bus safety with your child, including remembering to stay seated while the bus is moving and use an inside voice while riding the bus. In addition, please talk about the winter safety information below.
Here are some important Winter Transportation Safety tips for students:
Please dress in warm winter clothing such as a hat, mittens and boots - bright colors if
possible.
Please be on time at the bus stop.
Please wait for the bus several feet further off the road in a safe place in winter weather.
Please use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping and injuring
yourself on icy road surfaces or steps.
Please move away from the bus to a place where you and the driver can see each other after
you exit the bus.
Please cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus after getting the "all clear" signal from the
driver before leaving the curb.
Please keep all school materials in a backpack.
Here are some hazardous conditions to watch for:
Please do not stand or play on snow piles at the bus stop to avoid sliding into the street in the
path of oncoming traffic.
Please do not attempt to retrieve your books or lunch box from around or underneath the bus
until after it has cleared the unloading zone.
Please do not push or shove when getting on or off the bus.
Please do not chase after the bus or attempt to grab the rear bumper.

During this month’s Junior Master Gardener lessons 4th Graders are learning about the various Hardiness Zones that gardeners use to determine which plants will be successful in their area. Fifth Graders will learn about Pest Management during their JMG lesson. Trapper Phil will be our guest speaker and explain how different animals can damage gardens and crops while showing different ways to manage those “pests”.
The 4th Grade Snowshoeing trip has been modified into a Nature Hike through Oxbow Creek Park. While we’re not able to use our snowshoes at the moment, exploring the woods in winter is still an adventure. Students are able to get to spots that aren’t accessible in other seasons! Fingers crossed for the 3rd Grade Snowshoeing next month.
Kindergarten students are learning about the members of the weasel family in their 3RP Trip called “Stinkies.” Students will interact with bones and furs, and play a game while learning what makes these animals unique.
Second graders will learn about Plants in the Winter with a lesson from our 3RP Naturalists. Students will explore how different plants change during the weather in the winter months and practice some scientific sketching!
We have a lot more in store for our students after the new year. Please be sure to follow us on Facebook to see examples of the student learning! https://www.facebook.com/CBPAMES
Winter weather reminders
Minnesota weather is shifting gears, and the Anoka-Hennepin School District has plans in place for when extreme winter weather arrives.
The safety of all students is the first priority when determining if schools should stay open in adverse weather. If a determination is made to close school due to extreme winter weather, the district will alert families in a variety of ways, including:
Phone, text or email message from AHlert system (for Anoka-Hennepin parents/guardians only).
District and school websites.
District and school social media pages (e.g. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).
Media outlets including WCCO, KSTP, FOX 9, KARE 11, CCX Media, WCCO radio and Star Tribune newspaper.
Those responsible for activities scheduled in schools over the weekend will determine if adverse weather conditions necessitate a cancellation.
Read more about the district’s policies on extreme winter weather at ahschools.us/weather.

Volunteer news
Thank you to those volunteers who helped us in the workroom each week with making copies and laminating! By helping staff with those projects, you are allowing our staff to be able to spend more time in the classroom working with students.
Please see below for what help is currently needed:
Read-a-Thon Chair(Co-Chair): The CBPA PTO is looking for a volunteer or 2 who might be interested in coordinating our Read-a-thon Fundraising Event. This event not only raises money for our school but it also promotes reading among our students! This event typically takes place in February. The chair(s) would be responsible for working with the PTO and school staff to plan the event including goals, timeline and prizes. In addition, the chair would promote and communicate the event to CBPA families to insure student participation. The chair would work with the volunteer coordinator to secure volunteers to help with the tracking of students minutes. If you have a passion for reading and event planning this could be a great role for you to coordinate. Please let me know if you are interested and thank you!
Skillbuilders (1st & 2nd grade): Skillbuilders is a program we offer students in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade. Trained volunteers come in typically once a week, during the school day and work with specific students in each of those grade levels with literacy and math comprehension activities. We are hoping to get this program started in January and it runs continuously throughout the school year. I am currently recruiting for volunteers to help with 1st and 2nd grade basic math skills for 1/2 hour per week. Training is provided for all interested volunteers! Thank you to those volunteers who have signed up already to help! I could use more help so if you are interested in helping in math in 1st and 2nd grade, please click on the sign up genius link below for more information:
January Lunchroom: We will be continuing to have volunteers assist us in the lunchroom during the month of January. Volunteers will help with getting the students through the serving line, assisting them while they are eating, helping them during lunch dismissal and wiping down tables. The time is 11 a.m. - 1:45 p.m. However, if you are not able to commit to the entire time - that is ok - we will take whatever time you are willing to offer. Just note in your signup what time you will be volunteering! Please click on the links below to see what days help is needed:
Choir Volunteers: Volunteers are needed to help with choir rehearsals every Tuesday and Thursday through Thursday, April 3rd 4-5pm. Volunteers will assist with attendance, help direct students to stay on task and remain quiet during and after rehearsal, distribute materials and assist with student dismissal and parent pick up. Two volunteers are needed each date. If you can help, please click on the link below to see what dates are available:
Ninja Math Warriors:
On Friday, February 14th, our kindergarten and 1st grade classes will be having a Ninja Math Warrior Day! Volunteers are needed to be at each ninja station monitoring that the students are writing down the data they collect. One volunteer is needed per station. Each shift is 1 hour long. Volunteers are needed to help throughout the day with the different classes. We also have a need for volunteers to help with set up (7:45-8:45 a.m.) and clean up (2:40-3:40 p.m.) Please click on the link below to sign to help:
