Online Elementary Weekly Newsletter
April 27, 2025
Office Information
Hello Online Elementary School Families,
Elementary students will be taking the FAST assessment for reading and the HMH assessment for math over the next couple of weeks. FAST stands for Formative Assessment System for Teachers. HMH-Math is a growth measure test. Both FAST and HMH-Math are given in the fall, winter, and spring.
FastBridge assessments help teachers make informed pedagogical decisions, such as designing lessons and creating small groups of students that are appropriate for your child. The assessments are not graded and have no impact on grades. Screening assessments simply provide teachers with data to best meet your child’s academic needs.
It is extremely important that the assessment be completed by your child without your assistance for item answers.
The assessments will be given online as part of the elementary school day. Teachers will be sharing more information as part of their weekly communication.
FAST Assessment:
Kindergarten and 1st grade students will work directly with their teacher or other Online School staff member to complete the assessment during a Google Meet. Please, help your student be ready to meet with their teacher.
2nd and 3rd graders will take part of the assessment as an assignment and another part directly with the teacher during a Google Meet.
4th and 5th graders will be able to complete the entire assessment as an assignment.
HMH-Math Assessment:
K-5 teachers will work with their students in the virtual classroom.
Google Meet meetings, breakout rooms, small groups, and other options will be considered for students to take the test.
Please reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions about FAST and HMH-Math assessments. At Online Elementary School, we are dedicated to providing engaging learning experiences.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Bush

Atentamente,
Jeffrey Bush

3rd Grade
Dear 3rd Grade Families,
We’ve had an exciting and busy few weeks in third grade! Here’s a peek at what we’ve been working on in class:
Reading:
Our class has been diving into the world of folktales! Students have enjoyed reading stories passed down through generations and learning about the moral or lesson each one teaches. We’ve also explored how folktales often follow certain patterns and looked at the different types, like pourquoi tales, trickster tales, and beast tales.
Math:
We just wrapped up Unit 7 learning about division! Now we’re moving into a new unit all about patterns with numbers. We’ll be identifying number patterns, exploring rules, and practicing our critical thinking skills.
Writing:
Our young researchers have been hard at work on their animal research projects. We’re learning how to take notes, organize information, and present facts clearly. The project is nearing its end, and we’re looking forward to publishing and sharing our final pieces soon!
Important Dates to Remember:
Monday, May 26th: No school – Memorial Day
Tuesday, May 27th: Field Trip to Como Planetarium! (More information coming soon)
Thank you for your continued support at home. We’re looking forward to a fun and productive end to the school year.

4th Grade
Dear 4th Grade Families,
Wow! 4th graders exceeded my expectations this week on their Canadian Territories and Provinces research posters! If you haven’t seen your child’s project, please ask them about it! We spent a week researching Canada, and students did individual research on a Territory of their choice. Students were expected to use their research in their posters and visual presentations, but they went above and beyond. I am so proud of them!
We have officially ended our Historical Fiction unit and are beginning Realistic Fiction next week!
In math, we have been working on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with the same denominators. Next week, we will work on multiplying fractions by a whole number! Thank you for making sure your student is doing their assignments on HMHEd, the app on their ipad. The work we do in Seesaw is our lesson and practice. The work students do on HMHEd is their individual assignment and work.
Please contact me any time:

Fifth graders have been working on writing letters this week. Please encourage them to write a letter by pen and mail it to someone special! They also have been working on their signature so make sure they sign it!
We have been nearing the end of our unit on multiplying fractions and students will be taking a test on the subject next week on Thursday - ask your student if they are ready or if they want help studying! We will be taking our end of the year reading and math tests in early May.
Reach out with any questions or concerns,

News from Nurse Jenny
Measles
There has been a dramatic rise in measles cases across the United States, primarily in unvaccinated individuals. Tragically, two children have recently died due to measles. While we do not have any confirmed cases in Minnesota yet, SPPS Health and Wellness would like to remind families to stay up-to-date on immunizations that protect against a number of serious diseases, including measles.
We will be reaching out to families that, according to our records, have a child that is not fully vaccinated against measles. We respect that these families may have made informed decisions to decline vaccinations in the past. Our duties as public health professionals are to inform them of contagious outbreaks that may affect their family.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily by coughing, talking or being in the same room with someone who has measles. Symptoms include a fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes followed by a rash.
Measles can be very dangerous, especially for babies and young children.
About one out of four people who get measles will be hospitalized. The majority of hospitalizations are for children.
One out of every 1,000 people with measles will develop brain swelling due to infection (encephalitis), which may lead to brain damage.
Between one to three people out of 1,000 with measles will die, even with the best care.
Unvaccinated individuals who have been exposed to measles may need to quarantine for up to 21 days.
The best protection for you and your family against measles is the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine.
The MMR vaccine is a required school immunization and is extremely effective at protecting against measles. Children routinely receive two doses of MMR vaccine: The first at 12-15 months of age, and the second at 4-6 years of age. Families with students who do not have two doses of this vaccine due to a non-medical exemption on file or who are covered under the McKinney–Vento Homeless Assistance Act are recommended to consult with their healthcare provider and complete this series even if they have passed these ages
For more information and up-to-date information about measles cases in the United States, visit https://www.cdc.gov/measles/data-research/index.html or the Minnesota Department of Health at https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/measles/index.html.
Please contact your health care provider with questions. Health Start Clinics, located at SPPS high schools, also offer the MMR vaccines. Visit spps.org/healthstart for more information. Students with State or no insurance can receive the MMR vaccine at the SPPS Student Placement Center (2102 University Ave. W.). Call 651-632-3763 to make an appointment.
Please contact Contact Nurse Jenny if you want more information on any other health related topic at 651-419-1219 or Jennifer.martineau@spps.org.
