Principal Message
Dear Families,
We had a great week back at the nest and are in full swing as we finish the 24-25 school year! Today our students practiced what to do in a hard lockdown situation. Before the lockdown drill occurred, Ms. Davis made an announcement reminding all students that this was a practice drill similar to how we practice a fire or shelter in place drill. D25 school resource officer John O'Leary and several officers from the AHPD joined us for our practice. While these drills are something we wish we didn't have to do we are always so proud of our students and staff for their quick responses to keeping everyone safe. Great job, Olive Owls!
As a reminder, our school WILL BE participating in the Solar Eclipse viewing on Monday, April 8th. If you DO NOT want your child to participate and would prefer they stay inside with an alternative activity, please make sure you email their classroom teacher AND Ms. Davis by the end of the day today.
Sincerely,
Erin, Julia, and the OMS Staff
Solar Eclipse Information for Monday, April 8th
The following is the timeline for the total solar eclipse in the Chicagoland area:
12:51 pm Total Eclipse Begins
2:08 pm Max Point of the Total Eclipse
3:22 pm Total Eclipse Ends
It can be damaging to our eyes to stare directly into the sun and during a total eclipse. Because of this, I wanted to reach out to you to let you know our plan for that day to ensure the safety of our students and staff:
No recess during the timeframe of the total eclipse (unless the weather and cloud coverage permits)
We will supply each student with the proper protective eyewear.
Solar glasses were purchased by D25 from PNJ Solar, website: www.pnjsolar.com. See photo above.
- PNJ Solar glasses conform to and meet the Transmittance Requirements of ISO 12312-2:2015(E), Filters for Direct Observation of the Sun.
Students MUST wear the protective eyewear in order to go outside during the total eclipse timeframe.
Class Placement 24-25 OPTIONAL Parent Input Form
On, Monday, April 5th, Ms. Davis emailed all families an optional input form as our staff begins to think about student class placement for the 24-25 school year.
At OMS, the student placement process for the upcoming school year is taken very seriously. Each spring, our teachers engage in a collaborative process to create healthy learning groups. We work together to ensure balance in a wide variety of areas including heterogeneously grouped students or students of varying abilities, students with special needs or concerns, social/behavior patterns of students, gender, the number of students assigned per room, learning styles of the students, peer relationships, classroom structure, and the instructional styles of the receiving teacher. We ask that you trust our teaching staff in this process.
However, if you feel there is information that would not otherwise be considered in our student placement process, you will find an OPTIONAL form that you may fill out below. Please know that the placement process for all OMS students is extensive and considers many factors.
THIS FORM MUST BE FILLED OUT EACH YEAR. We believe that students learn, grow, and mature therefore requests from previous years are not considered.
The deadline for completing this form is Friday, April 12th. Information shared after April 12th may not be considered.
Where did it go Wednesday?
Please review the linked pictures and remind your child to claim their item on Monday.

Earth Day Fair - Wind Turbine Challenge
The Wind Turbine Challenge is returning to the Earth Day Fair on Tuesday, April 23. Olive students, families, and staff are invited to design and create a set of blades at home using recycled or repurposed materials. The set of blades that produces the most electricity at the fair will be declared our 2024 Challenge winner. We provide the shafts, instructions, and some design hints. You do not have to attend the Fair to participate in the challenge.
Complete this form no later than Wednesday, April 17 to request shafts and instructions. (link to Google Form)
