Thoughts from Dr. Voelkl
As we continue to move through these final weeks of the first quarter of the school year, I still reflect often on what carried us through, what allowed us to continue to stay the course, to remain on this journey to educate our children in this everchanging world. I believe strength came to us in many ways, but our faith certainly carried us through and continues to do so. As our students learn about and experience their faith, we at times have to be deliberate in our approach and our message.
People remember and are affected by vivid experiences. When Jesus wanted His disciples to learn about servanthood, He got down on His knees and washed their feet. You can be sure those disciples never forgot that faith lesson! You can do the same with your children. For example, to help them experience the concept of grace, involve your family in giving to others without expecting anything in return. Or to encourage kind words as mentioned in Ephesians 4:29, invite family members to write or draw a kind note to one another.
Use teachable moments. Typically, when your kids are enveloped in emotion-packed situations, they are the most ready to grow. When circumstances provoke feelings of fear, sadness, anger, exhilaration, awe or wonder, be prepared to help them see how God is working. When your child is scared it may be the opportune time to teach about God’s presence. Jesus took advantage of teachable moments often, such as during the storm on the lake and with those who threatened to stone the adulterous woman.
Employ delight. Your kids will learn more when they enjoy the process. Make learning about and experiencing our faith fun! Few people gain a love for anything that feels monotonous. No one ever accused Jesus of being dull or boring.
Faith with shallow roots withers and dies ~ Faith that is watered and tended to grows and blooms ~

Meet the Teacher- Mr. Bobrowski
Leonard Bobrowski- Music
Married? No
Children/animals: No to both, but I love other peoples’ pets!
Who is your hero? My mom.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be? New York City, for all the cultural opportunities.
What is your favorite family vacation? Combined New York and Washington D.C. trip
What is your favorite thing about being a teacher? I love it when students “Get it” and are excited that they did/learned something that they didn’t know they could.
What is your proudest accomplishment? Taking care of my mom as long as I could before she passed away. It was a very stressful time, but with God's help I was able to do it until I couldn’t anymore.
What makes you laugh the most? Anything - I find humor when many people don’t. It used to drive my mom crazy - she didn’t want to sit by me because I laughed when others didn’t. Can’t beat the original Roseanne and The Big Bang Theory.
If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Because I can be rather lazy, I would spend the day at the pool with a good book. I could get my laps in, and then veg out the rest of the day.
If money was no object, what would you do all day? I would get the best seat in the house and attend both parts of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and then a great meal at one of the fine restaurants in NYC, but with COVID I’m not sure that will happen any time soon.
If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? 1941, the year my mom and dad got married.
What is the best gift you have ever been given? My faith.
If you could share a meal with 4 people, living or dead who would they be? My four grandparents. I only knew one, and she died when I was ten, so it would be great to get to know them and find out what life was like in Poland. All four were immigrants. I would hope that at this dinner I could understand Polish!
What is your favorite Holiday? Holy Week and Easter, for all the spiritual blessings that come from these holy days, but I also enjoy the joy of the Christmas season.
What is the most daring thing you have ever done? Kissing on stage during our parish plays.
What is your favorite food? Usually Italian, but I am willing to try anything once.
Treat? Doozles vanilla custard (the real stuff) when I need to celebrate.
Restaurant? Maggiano’s
Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous? Not that I am aware, but Polish royalty would be nice.
What is your family motto- spoken or unspoken? “Make your life a song to God.”
If you had a warning label, what would it say? “Don’t get me started!”
Who was your favorite teacher in school and why? Sister Eucharia in 6th grade. She was firm, demanding, and made us work like the dickens. Talk about homework! She was less than 5 feet tall and older than God, but you did not cross her. Loved her dearly.
What is your favorite family tradition? I like baking the same Christmas cookies and bread that my mom did when I was growing up.
If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be? A dolphin - I am a pretty decent swimmer.
