Community Crew News #39
May 27th, 2024
Greetings Conway Community!
It’s a wrap! Conway Academy’s 2023- 24 Celebration of Learning hosted parents, guardians, friends, and community members that turned-out in record numbers and our students wowed their audience.
They are also a way to meet standards but also support our students in College and Career readiness by bringing the standards to life but it goes beyond that. Students at Conway understand how to articulate their learning. Our classrooms are intentionally designed to support oral communication, listening, and developing interpersonal skills. Extended discourse is at the forefront in teaching and learning. Students learn to be collaborators, they learn together by working together, that alone is a powerful skill for the future.
Students learn from experts inside and outside of the classroom through field work, partnerships and then they integrate that learning into their presentations.
Preparing for a celebration of learning requires that students know their standards- based content, independently use higher-order thinking skills such as synthesis or transfer to interact with audience members about that content, and cite evidence that demonstrates their learning.
Celebrations of Learning are more than a display of student work and more than school gathering at the end of the year. This event compels students to reflect on and articulate what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public.
This event motivates students and creates a purpose for them to care about the quality of their work. Presenting work to an authentic audience also raises the stakes and sets the expectation that all students, not just a select group, will share their high-quality products. It motivates students to push themselves as learners and achieve more than they thought possible.
Authentic Experiences
Our guests were afforded authentic experiences when our learners share their learning, share their research and give evidence-based descriptions of their results.
In order for students to effectively communicate their achievement and learning, they must have regular opportunities to assess and articulate their progress toward learning targets. That happens on a regular basis in our classrooms!
Local Food Vendors Give Back
High Quality work
There were hundreds of examples of High Quality Work curated for display so our walls speak to the learning.
3rd Grade Musical Revue
3rd graders performed their Musical, We Only Have One Earth, to a packed house of proud parents.
Celebrations of learning open the door for meaningful conversations among families, students, and teachers about standards and achievement.
EPIC COL Community Survey
Thank you for coming to Conway Academy’s 2024 Celebration of Learning! Your feedback is important to us for continuous improvement. Also, for every survey completed, your student will be entered into a drawing for Conway swag and the class with the highest survey participation will receive a popsicle party. We kindly ask that you take a few minutes to complete this survey. https://tinyurl.com/2sz6muy7
Together we will continue to create opportunities for our learners to achieve more than they think possible.
Classified Employee Recognition Week
Thank you to everyone that made our Classified Employee Recognition Week EPIC. The week included special events and it also included district administrators shadowing our hard-working classified employees. Here is a short video capturing the week.
Communication is extremely important to everyone at our EPIC school. Please make sure to scroll all the way through the weekly message. If you miss a message, you can view all communication on our website under "NEWS".
I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire students to discover their unlimited potential through Excellence, Perseverance, Integrity, and Compassion. Together we are creating an EPIC school.
We are in this together and believe, We Are Crew, not passengers.

Meet our New Librarian
Please help me welcome our new librarian, Miss Annie. She will join us on Tuesday, May 28th. She is wrapping us her school year working as a librarian at a San Diego Unified elementary school and will arrive here just in time to help us wrap up our year. See her message below.
Hi all! My name is Annie Hilderbrand aka Ms. Annie! As you guys wrap up the school year, I am happy to jump in and work with everyone to finalize the 2023-2024 session before working towards a great 2024-2025 year. I am a passionate young professional who loves literature and enjoys bringing warmth, creativity, and growth to library spaces. Working at school sites for the past four years and in aquatics for six years has allowed me to expand my child development skills while also finishing my BA at CSUSM. Now that I have completed my degree, I am excited to grow with the Conway Crew and positively impact the community. Some things I enjoy outside of work include traveling, snowboarding, hiking, and of course shopping. I look forward to meeting everyone and working with the team!
