Hastings Middle School 2024-2025
March 30, 2025
Dear HMS Families,
Spring is in full swing, and with it comes a flurry of activities as we wrap up another great school year! We have some exciting events ahead, and I wanted to take a moment to share a few key updates with you.
First, we would love to see you at Volley for a Cause at UAHS! This fun event features a friendly volleyball match between staff members from JMS and HMS, all for a great cause. Proceeds from the event will benefit Best Buddies International and Special Olympics, organizations that do incredible work supporting inclusion and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The game kicks off at 7:00 p.m., and we hope to see many of our families there cheering us on!
As we near the end of the school year, we look forward to celebrating our students’ hard work with various activities and events. It’s also the time of year when students begin preparing for next year. By now, you should have engaged in the course scheduling process for next school year. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Additionally, our students will soon take the Ohio State Tests (OSTs) in math, ELA, and 8th grade science. These assessments provide valuable insight into student learning, inform our teaching practices, and help guide future course placements. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to do their best and get plenty of rest before testing days.
As always, thank you for being such an engaged and supportive school community. We are grateful for your partnership in making HMS a great place for our students to learn and grow.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon!
Penny Stires
Principal, Hastings Middle School

Counselor's Corner
Service Hours Information
Middle School students in Upper Arlington are asked to complete five hours of community service each year. If your child is volunteering anywhere this year or even just out shoveling a neighbor’s driveway (and not getting paid), those things count toward hours.
The information about community service and logging hours is on the Hastings website: https://hastings.uaschools.org/academic-program/community-service
We will be working with students to help them log hours later this month. Students should see their grade level counselor if they have questions.

6th Grade: Tina Farbizo, tfarbizo@uaschools.org
7th Grade: Catherine Shapiro, cshapiro@uaschools.org
8th Grade: Kelly Dainton, kdainton@uaschools.org
District Updates
Student iPad Software Updates
With the upcoming State testing right around the corner, we need to ensure that Student iPads are as up-to-date as possible. All Software Updates have been approved by the technology department and can be installed by opening the Settings App -> Tap on General -> Software Update -> Update Now.
*iPads must be connected to Wi-Fi and charged to more than 50% or plugged in while the update runs.
Progress Reports: Elementary and Secondary
Unfortunately, the Progress Report icon in PowerSchool has been eliminated. This was out of Upper Arlington’s control. In order to access your child’s progress report, your child’s intervention specialist or speech language pathologist will share the report after each reporting period. You should receive the 3rd quarter progress report via SameGoal by March 25th.
You Belong UA District Family Book Read
This spring, the district is offering a family engagement opportunity through the You Belong UA Family Book Read. In this second year of the event, we are inviting families to journey through Nic Stone’s book Clean Getaway together and then gather with us at the Amelita Mirolo Barn for a family “book talk” from 6:30 - 8 p.m., May 1, 2025.
New this year, UAHS students in our Teaching Professions Pathway will facilitate the book talk for students and families on May 1. This activity is a part of their curricular experience, and we hope to welcome families in support of their learning.
Families can read about Clean Getaway in several locations:
Let us know that you will be reading with us! Click here if you will be reading the book and to RSVP for the May 1 event. RSVPs are requested by April 18, 2025.
If you have questions or would like additional support to obtain Clean Getaway, please email kmanderson@uaschools.org.
