Create interactive Timelines Google Slides or Sutori
Option 1: Google Slides
Pros:
- Drawing a timeline in Google Slides is simple. Just use the "Insert Line" tool to begin your timeline. Use "Elbow Connector" lines to add your events. Use text boxes with pictures and/or shapes to mark your events.
- Depending on how you choose to present and organize your timeline, you may choose to adjust the dimensions of your slide. For most timelines, you'll leave the dimensions the same. However if you would like your timeline to also be an e-book, you can create a custom page setup to create 8x11 pages.
- Using Google Slides, you can insert images from your Google Drive, the web, or take a picture using your Chromebook's camera. Images found through the Google Slides search feature are automatically labeled for reuse with modification, so you don't have to worry about breaking copyright laws.
- If you would like to use a screenshot as an image, just click Control + Shift + Show All Windows button on your Chromebook. You can use a screenshot to create a tile that links to another website on your topic.
- Videos are easy to upload using a URL, searched directly from YouTube, or uploaded from your own Google Drive.
- Want to make your Google Slides timeline truly interactive? Use the Poll Everywhere extension to create a poll right in your slides.
- As you already know, with Google Slides you can collaborate with your peers, give and receive feedback, and publish your work to the web.
Cons:
- Just one so far... You cannot embed audio into your slides. However, workarounds include inserting and hiding videos and linking to outside web-based resources (such as linking to webpage with a podcast.)
Option 2: Sutori
Sutori is a nice option if you'd like to work off of a template.
Pros:
- Similar to Google Suite Tools (such as Slides) you can add collaborators to your timeline.
- With Sutori, you can also add multimedia content such as audio, video, and gifs.
- Sutori also allows you to insert multiple choice, drag and drop, and forum questions.
- Want to create different layers to your timeline? Sutori timelines are vertical timelines, however you can still create breaks with new headings if you want to look at a time period through a different lens.
- Like Google Slides, Sutori timelines embed beautifully into Blogger, which may be an option for publishing your work down the line.
Cons:
- Without Sutori's premium version, you cannot add more than one collaborator.
The video below is a teacher who is creating a timeline template for her students. However, it does give a nice overview of how to build a timeline using Sutori.
