Upcoming School Holidays
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Brighton Central School District will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In the United States, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day is observed annually on the third Monday in January. The day commemorates the life and work of Dr. King, who was a Baptist minister and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. Under Dr. King’s leadership, nonviolent protest became the defining feature of the modern civil rights movement in America. King first demonstrated the efficacy of passive resistance in 1955–56 while helping to lead the prolonged bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, that succeeded in dismantling bus segregation laws. King’s words were as powerful as his deeds, and his moving and eloquent addresses, which gave hope to millions, continue to inspire people throughout the world.

Lunar New Year
Brighton Central School District will be closed on Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, in honor of Lunar New Year. This is the first year that Asian Lunar New Year is a public-school holiday across New York State. BHS will host a mini assembly for all students on Monday, 1/27/2025. It is sponsored by our International Club and Asian Student Union. Lunar New Year, often called the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, is the most important holiday in China and Chinese communities around the world. It is not only celebrated in China. Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore also practice the Lunar New Year holiday. The two-week celebration includes family and friends, feasting and fireworks, parties, and parades. Lunar New Year begins on the date of the second new Moon after the winter solstice, which always occurs in late December. This means that the first day of the Lunar New Year can occur anytime between January 21 and February 20. In 2025, Lunar New Year falls on January 29th. In 2025, we ring in the Year of the Snake, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. The animal designations of the zodiac follow a 12-year cycle and are always used in the same sequence.

BHS Football Coach Nominated by the Buffalo Bills
Lian Nominated for Don Shula Coach of the Year Award
Brighton Football Coach Stephen Lian is the Buffalo Bills’ nominee for the Don Shula NFL High School Football Coach of the Year award. The national award honors high school football coaches that demonstrate character, integrity, leadership, dedication to the community, commitment to player health and safety, and on-field success.
The NFL will select two winners, one from each conference. They will be invited to the 2025 Pro Bowl and Super Bowl. The NFL Foundation and Nike have teamed up to give the two winners a $15,000 award for their high school football programs and a $10,000 cash award. The other 30 club nominees will all receive a $1,000 cash award.
Lian led the Bruins to a 12-1 record and the program’s first Sectional Championship and Far West Regional Championship in school history. He was also named the All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year and All-County Coach of the Year.
“It's very humbling knowing that there are so few that are nominated each year," Lian said. "I've been fortunate to have received some awards, especially this year and over time, but it's definitely a full staff effort. It's really everybody else involved, and no one person more important than the next. So, I really want to give a lot of thanks to my coaching staff."
He became the first Asian American head coach to win a sectional title.
"It is very meaningful for me," Lian said. "To be able to pave my own way, and then see it culminate and making the accomplishment to be able to do that, it for sure, is special to me. I've got three kids of my own … and for them to be able to see that their dad was able to do this and know where it all started, that's been very special."

Peak Experience Adventure
Gunnison National Forest, Colorado
This summer, from August 1st through August 7th, Brighton students will have an opportunity to travel to Gunnison National Forest in Colorado for a seven-day adventure. Over the course of the trip, students will rock climb, participate in low and high ropes course activities, and backpack. Rope course activities include zip lines, power poles, repelling, and “The Screamer”. The three-day backpack traverses through the Gunnison National Forest where we will climb mountains over 13,000 feet high. Weather permitting, one of our peak ascents will be at dawn, which is a truly amazing experience. Current eighth graders through juniors are eligible for the trip, and spots are limited. If you are interested in joining the group and would like more information on the activities and cost of the trip, please contact Jamie Porta (the Outdoor Club advisor) at jamie_porta@bcsd.org.
