Parent Community Workshops/Meetings
We now have a Parent Events page where all information (e.g. event registration, past event recordings and resources) will be posted. Our goal this year is to provide more opportunities for parents to learn about the tools, apps and resources available to help support their child. All events and workshops will be offered in multiple languages. An RSVP form will typically be sent prior to the meeting or workshop so that we can gauge the participant numbers and determine language needs.
We hope that you find these events and workshops useful this year as we transition to this new normal. We look forward to working with you this year as we learn together.

Produce Donations
Through the next two weeks, we will continue having boxed produce donations at Julius West MS every Thursday. The time will be from 10am to 11:00am in the main parking area of the school. If you have difficulty getting to the school during the time listed above, please call or email us at JWMS.
The produce will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. This service is being provided by MCPS to help support families during COVID-19. We are primarily serving the JWMS community and our surrounding cluster schools during this drive. The delivery will be able to serve approximately 200+ families, one box per family.
MYP and Student Service Learning
Middle Years Programme (MYP) Updates
Julius West is a proud International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) school. This all-inclusive learning framework focuses on lifelong learning, critical thinking, and responsible global citizenship. MYP concepts are embedded into content instruction, school events, and JAG lessons. To learn more about IB MYP, visit www.ibo.org
JAG (named for the jaguar, our school mascot) is an instructional period where students develop their skills as lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and responsible global citizens as part of our Middle Years Programme. Currently during JAG, students are participating in grade level Town Hall meetings focused on the topic of Identity.
All students attending Julius West this school year will participate in an MYP Summer Exploration, a series of activities designed to encourage lifelong learning, critical thinking, and responsible global citizenship. This year's Summer Exploration theme is Journeys! Visit here to learn more about the purpose and the structure of the MYP Summer Exploration. To access the activities, students should join the Google Classroom for their 2020-2021 grade level. Activities are due on September 25.

Student Service Learning (SSL) Updates
Student Service Learning (SSL) is a great way for students to get involved in their community and develop skills for lifelong learning. It is also a Maryland state high school graduation requirement. Students can earn SSL hours during middle school and high school. Opportunities for service learning open to middle school students will be highlighted frequently in this newsletter.
Opportunities for both in-person and remote service learning are available this school year. Please visit https://bit.ly/SSLOpportunities for all opportunities posted on the Montgomery County Volunteer Center website that have been tagged as MCPS SS, and https://bit.ly/VirtualSSL2020 for any virtual/remote SSL opportunities available to students during this time.
To receive credit for SSL activities, students must turn in a completed Service Learning Verification form . Until schools reopen, forms can be emailed to the Julius West SSL coordinator, Mrs. Krista Fiabane, at Krista_R_Fiabane@mcpsmd.org - electronic copies or digital photos of the forms are both acceptable.
