Prayer for Tolerance, Forgiveness, Reconciliation: National Indigenous People’s Day
O God, Creator and Father of all, with humility we your children acknowledge the relationship of all living things. For this we thank you, we praise you and we worship you.
We call on you, Great Mystery, the Word made Flesh – our teacher, prophet and brother – to open our hearts to all our brothers and sisters, and with them to grow in the wisdom, honesty, courage and respectfulness shown in The Sacred Teachings.
Give us the vision and honesty to recognize that we are all brothers and sisters of one human family, created and sustained by the One Creator. As we deal with many challenges, may we never give way to fear and anger, which can be the source of division and threat amongst peoples.
We look to how God always gives to us, as a remedy for sins of prejudice and intolerance. We see in God the Creator of all things, One who always provides and is generous – even given the abuses we have heaped on one another and on the earth.
We see in the Son, Jesus Christ - the innocent Victim who pours His life blood out from the Cross for all peoples.
We see how the Holy Spirit is God’s gift, alive in our world today – inspiring vision and hope that we can have the same mind and heart of God!
May Your Spirit bless the souls who died at the Kamloops residential school and all souls who died at residential schools.
May this same Spirit also bring blessing and healing to all families and communities affected in any way by the schools. O Creator, show us the way to healing, forgiveness and reconciliation and a renewed fellowship.
Amen

Administrator's Message
As we enter our last week before summer break, our hearts are filled with gratitude and excitement for the many wonderful events and activities planned for our students. It has been a remarkable year, and we look forward to ending it on a high note with engaging and memorable experiences for everyone. Although it is wonderful to know we will all have an opportunity to refresh and recharge after a successful year of learning and working, we also know that there will be staff and students that we will be saying “goodbye” to as they begin their new journey in other schools next year. We wish them all the very best!
Here’s a glimpse of what’s coming up:
June 24: Grade 8 Extended Day
June 25: Grade 8 Luncheon and Dance
June 26: Play Day, BBQ Truck and Ice Cream Truck
June 27: Play Day-Rain Day
June 28: Last Day of School
The board has introduced new electronic report cards. These will be sent to each student's email on June 25. Please ensure to check your child's email to review their achievements (instructions will be attached).
We ask that you send your child with reusable bags to bring back their belongings at the end of the week. This small step helps us in our ongoing efforts to be more environmentally friendly.
We would like to wish Mr. Podobnik a Happy Retirement. He has had a wonderful teaching career at so many schools in DPCDSB and has touched the lives of hundreds, if not thousands of students that he worked with as a classroom teacher, a coach of many sports and extracurricular activities and finally as an administrator at many schools. I know you will all join me in offering your Congratulations to him! We wish him a wonderful retirement as he gets to do the things he truly enjoys, one of which spending time with his beautiful family.
We would also like to welcome Mark Trozzo as the new Principal to St. Edmund, starting in September. Currently, he is the Principal of St. Stephen where he has served the community for the past five years. We look forward to the insights, wealth of experience and knowledge he will bring to the St. Edmund community.
C. Fernandes

School Closure until September

Classes resume on Tuesday September 3, 2024 at 8:45am. We will continue to have an 8:45am start and a 3:15pm dismissal time.
Are you moving?
If you are planning to move or have already moved please notify the school office. If you have moved out of Peel Region, register at your local school so taxes will be directed to the board in which you reside. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Transportation 2024-2025
It is time for the Transportation department to get ready for next September. Transportation eligibility is based on the student's grade and distance from the school.
Eligibility for transportation is based on distance criteria:
FDK-Grade 1: 1.0 Kilometer
Grades 2-4: 1.6- Kilometers
Grades 5-8: 2.0-Kilometers
At St. Edmund, only students eligible for bussing based on Board guidelines, are able to take the bus. As per Board policy, until routes are established, no consideration will be made for empty seat riders. Parents of children from Jk-Grade 8 who hope to access the school bus through courtesy seat policy next year are reminded to find alternative transportation until the availability for additional riders has been determined. Information is also available at STOPR.
Sun Safety
With summer approaching and the warmer weather we are reminded about sun safety. Overexposure to the sun can cause skin damage. We remind students regularly to take precautions to protect their skin during recess times and to take precautions to be safe in the sun. The following are some suggestions when working and playing in the sun:
¨ Drink cool water. Anyone in a hot environment should drink cool water in small amounts frequently—one cup every 20 minutes. Avoid caffeinated soft drinks which cause dehydration.
¨ Dress Appropriately. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing
¨ Wear a hat to protect both the eyes and the skin
¨ When possible, stay out of direct sunlight
¨ Wear sun block; the higher the protection factor number, the greater the protection.
Parents are encouraged to reinforce these strategies with their children regularly.

Self-Identification Option for Indigenous Families
If you are First Nation (Status Indian or Non-Status Indian), Métis and/or Inuit you can self-identify as Indigenous. You do not need to produce any documentation or proof of ancestry. Self-identification is voluntary and confidential.
“This has been really important for us because of the sense of community and the connection to other Indigenous families.” ~ Melanie Cormier, parent
Self-identification will provide access to culture and language programs and monthly programming for students and families. Relevant information will be sent directly to you about upcoming cultural events and opportunities which help to build community and a sense of Indigenous pride in Dufferin-Peel.
