Vance County High School: Student Tips & Family Advice for October
As we move into October, here are some helpful tips and advice to ensure a successful month for students and families at VCHS.
1. Stay Organized
October brings a busy season with projects, tests, and school events. Encourage students to:
- Use a Planner: Keep track of important dates like test days, assignments, and school events.
- Create a Study Schedule: Set aside time each day for homework and review to avoid last-minute stress.
- Set Priorities: Focus on completing larger projects early, so there’s time to review before the deadline.
2. Stay Engaged
Active participation in class and school activities is key to academic success. Families can help by:
- Encouraging Attendance: Consistent attendance helps students stay up-to-date with lessons and school activities.
- Participating in School Events: October is full of events, sports, clubs, and more. Show school spirit by attending and cheering on our Vipers!
3. Communicate with Teachers
Open communication between families and teachers helps ensure that students stay on track.
- Monitor Progress: Use the Infinite Campus to check grades regularly and discuss areas for improvement.
- Ask for Help: If students are struggling, encourage them to contact teachers during office hours or after class for extra support.
4. Support Mental and Physical Health
October can be a stressful time, and it’s important for students to take care of their overall well-being.
- Sleep and Nutrition: Make sure students are getting enough rest and eating balanced meals to fuel their bodies and minds.
- Mental Health Resources: If your child is feeling overwhelmed, encourage them to speak with our school counselors, social workers and any other staff or seek other support resources. We are here to help!
5. Prepare for College and Career
For juniors and seniors, October is an important month for college and career preparation.
- College Applications: Seniors should be completing college applications and FAFSA forms. Don’t wait until the last minute! Continue to see Ms. Brewer for this.
- Career Exploration: Underclassmen can use this time to explore different career options through school programs and guidance from our counselors.

Class of 2025 Reminders and Updates
This Saturday, our seniors had an incredible opportunity to attend the HBCU College Fair in Cary! Students connected with various colleges and universities, explored academic programs, and gathered valuable information about scholarships and admissions.
It was inspiring to see our students engage with representatives, ask questions, and envision their futures. Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible!
