December 2024
A message from Dr. Gerault
Dear Fiest Families,
As we close out the year and head into the holiday season, I want to take a moment to express my appreciation for the incredible spirit of our Fiest community. This time of year is always special as we reflect on the accomplishments and growth of our students. It’s been a busy few months, and I’m so proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our students, teachers, and families.
With December moving into full swing, we have some exciting events to look forward to. I’m thrilled to invite you to our Winter Wonderland event on December 17! This is always a highlight of our year, where we come together as a school community to celebrate the season with fun learning activities, photo opportunities, and a heartwarming performance by our choir. From holiday crafts and games to music that will surely get you in the festive spirit, Winter Wonderland is an event you won’t want to miss. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families, teachers, and students to enjoy some time together and make lasting memories.
As we head into the winter break, I want to thank each of you for the support and commitment you’ve shown to our school. Fiest Elementary is a special place because of the collaboration between our staff, students, and families. I hope this holiday season brings joy, rest, and time with loved ones.
From our Fiest Elementary family to yours, have a safe and happy holiday season, and we look forward to welcoming you back in the new year!

Counselors
The link below shows all of the wonderful things that we are working on and doing with our students at Fiest Elementary as the counselors.
Nurse's Office
Please remember to return Vision and Hearing referrals as soon as your child has been seen by a Health Care Professional. See to Succeed applications must be returned to the school no later than December 11th.
We are in the season of illness and germ sharing. A sick child should be kept home to rest and recover until symptoms resolve. Please remember that keeping a sick child at home protects other children, school staff, and visiting community members from contracting an illness that can be spread person to person.
Attendance Office
Please remember that whenever your child is absent, we must have a handwritten note from you explaining why the absence occurred. All notes must include the child’s first and last name, the date of the absence, the reason for the absence, and your signature. If you have a doctor’s excuse, please attach it the note.
Testing Coordinator
As we embark into December… I know December already. There is no state or district testing done during this month. When we return from the winter break in January, your child will be completing their mid-year testing in all subject areas. Stay tuned to those dates in our next newsletter.
Curriculum Information from the Instructional Specialists
Laurie Hendricks- Math and Science
As we enter into the last month of the first semester, I wanted to let you know about the awesome things happening in 2nd - 5th grade math & science! All 2nd -5th grade students will be taking their second math test on December 11th.
2nd Grade - In math, students are finishing up their Data Analysis unit and beginning their money and finances unit. It is a great time to bring out the coins and work on identifying coins by name and value and also having your child add up the value of multiple coins. In science students are finishing up their Energy unit and beginning their Objects in the Sky unit. Please encourage your student to go outside and observe the moon each night.
3rd Grade - In math, students are finishing up their Fractions Unit and beginning their second Unit on Multiplication and Division. Please continue to work on knowing those math facts. In science, students are finishing up their Space Unit by learning about the planets in our solar system. Please work on planet order with your child (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune).
4th Grade - In math, students are finishing up their Fractions Unit and beginning their unit on Addition and Subtraction of Decimals. At home, students can work on lining up their place values neatly and adding or subtracting the numbers. In science, students are beginning their Phases of the Moon lesson. Please encourage your child to go outside and observe the moon each night for their Moon Observation Calendar. 4th grade students have their second Science DPM on December 12th.
5th Grade - In math, students are finishing up their Addition and Subtraction of Fractions Unit and beginning their unit on Multiplication and Division of Fractions. Please continue to work at home on multiplication facts as this will help greatly in their understanding of Fractions. In Science, students are starting their lesson on the Water Cycle and the Formation of Sedimentary Rocks and Fossil Fuels. 5th grade students will have their second Science DPM on December 12th.

Third Grade- Get ready for exciting learning experiences in third grade! In reading, students will dive into informational texts, learning to identify key details and understand how graphic features like charts and diagrams enhance the text. They'll also practice finding the central idea and retelling text in their own words. Writing will focus on crafting clear and concise informational paragraphs and combining sentences to create more complex ideas. In social studies, we'll embark on a global journey, exploring the rich tapestry of ethnic and cultural celebrations from around the world.
Fourth Grade- Fourth graders will explore a variety of texts, including informational articles and poetry. They'll learn to analyze text and graphic features, synthesize information to understand the central idea, and appreciate the author's craft. Writing will center on letter writing and essay writing, with a focus on identifying and removing off-topic sentences. In social studies, we'll delve into the history of Texas, exploring the colonization era, the establishment of missions, and the development of early settlements.
Fifth Grade- Fifth graders will strengthen their reading comprehension skills by analyzing biographies and informational texts. They'll focus on identifying the central idea and understanding the author's point of view. In writing, students will practice writing effective letters, paying close attention to using meaningful transitions to connect ideas. Social studies will take us on a journey through American history, exploring the westward expansion, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction era.

Can you believe we are almost ½ way through the school year?
As we approach the Winter Break, continue working on your grade-level high-frequency words and fast faces. Consistency is key when it comes to your child's learning and development. Spending just a few minutes each day on key skills—can make a significant difference in their progress. Whether it's reading, math, or a new language, regular, short bursts of practice help reinforce what they're learning in class and build confidence.
