Building Updates/Principal's Note:
Here is the welcome back letter in case you missed my last email.
July 2024
Dear Woodbrook Elementary Families,
Welcome to the 2024-25 school year! It is with great pleasure and pride that I begin this school year with you as the principal of Woodbrook Elementary. Over the past four years I have enjoyed getting to know the families that make up the Woodbrook Community. I know how important a strong school-home relationship is for our students and I look forward to meeting and working with each Woodbrook family. I would encourage all Woodbrook families to join us for a PTO sponsored event, Party on the Playground scheduled for August, 3, 2024 from 4:00-5:30 PM (weather permitting). This will give families a chance to reconnect or meet new families that will be joining Woodbrook. Whether you’ve called Elkhorn Public Schools home for years or have recently registered with us, we are looking forward to welcoming you to our building on the first day of school on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
At Woodbrook, the staff is dedicated to the school improvement process which includes analyzing data, writing yearly goals and monitoring progress towards meeting those goals. When we come together this fall, we will begin by developing building and grade level goals and action plans. During the 2024-25 school year Elkhorn Public Schools will undergo an external review through Nebraska Frameworks. We look forward to hearing recommendations and commendations from this team of experts. The Woodbrook staff developed our mission statement before we opened Woodbrook. We believe our mission statement captures the values that are important to developing our culture. The Woodbrook mission is to develop a strong family bond by fostering positive, meaningful relationships with each other. We will use our strong relationships to establish a safe learning environment with high expectations where the staff, students and parents work together to create a respectful and responsible community. We will ignite a passion for continuous improvement with a growth mindset to be confident learners today, tomorrow and into the future.
We will have a few staff additions for the 2024-25 school year. Mrs. Maggie Onwiler is joining our second grade team. Mrs. Onwiler previously taught for Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools. Mrs. Petersen previously taught for Concordia Schools of Omaha and Ms. Weidner recently finished her student teaching at Manchester Elementary in Elkhorn. First day procedures
We are very much looking forward to the first day of school. On the first day of school it will start at 8:10 AM for grades 1st-5th and 9:00 AM for Kindergarten students. The classroom teachers will be outside to greet students 20 minutes before the start of school on the first day. If you are planning to walk your child up to the building, you'll need to park in one of the parking lots or on a street near the building. Do not park your vehicle in the drop-off lane.
The classroom teachers will meet students outside in the morning for Tuesday, August 13 through Thursday, August 15th. Grade level meeting spots are listed below. For dismissal, teachers will stand out front in similar spots until student(s) connect with rides. Please communicate with your child's teacher on how your student will get home each day. If you have multiple students, we ask that the older students walk and wait with the youngest child in your family.
(On Friday, August 16th we will begin Walking Club from 7:55-8:10 AM.)
- Kindergarten teachers will meet students in front of the main doors (door #1) beginning at 8:40 AM

- Second grade teachers will meet students in front of the cafeteria doors (door #14) beginning at 7:50 AM.

Walking Club (weather permitting) will take place on the back basketball court and the concrete walking path in front of the playground. Walking Club is monitored by Woodbrook staff. We will spend the first 3 days of school preparing our students for Walking Club.
Drop-off and Pick-Up Procedures
Here are few reminders to help traffic flow smoothly and keep our students and families safe!
- All drivers need to follow the rules and pull forward. Pulling forward is the key! If you are first car in the lane pull up to the flag pole.
- Always use the crosswalk at the main entrance to cross traffic in the pick up lane. Student should ONLY cross at that location without an adult.
- Drivers parking along Purple Martin Parkway will need to walk down the hill to pick up student or students.
- If your child is unable to unbuckle/buckle him/herself, please practice at home. This is a skill he/she needs to be able to do independently if you plan to use the pick-up/drop off lane.
- Students should enter and exit vehicles curbside only.
- Please do NOT get out of your vehicle if you are in the pick-up/drop off lane.
- The front lane of the building is wide enough for two cars. If you pick up your student and you are able to pull outside of the curbside lane you may pull around and exit the lane by staying to your left. If you curbside you will need to exit by staying to the right and looping around the west end of the building.
- Please be patient and be a positive role model for our children. These procedures are in plsce to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
- Drive slowly.
- Stay off cell phones.
- If you have a nanny, grandparents, friend etc...that will be picking up your student or students please share these procedures.
Pets at drop-off and pick-up
I love four legged furry friends! Please leave these friends at home during pick and drop off. We appreciate you being cognizant of those with allergies or fears. Because they are so cute they are also a distraction to our students during a time that we need to be extra careful for the safety of all our students. Thank you for understanding.
Visitor Guidelines
At Woodbrook, the school doors will remain locked during the school day and all visitors will gain access using the security camera/access panel outside the school's main entrance. Over the summer all Elkhorn schools added an additional layer of security. Once visitors have entered the front vestibule a second check in will be required before being able to enter the main office. Office staff will grant access after you do the following the steps.
1.)Push the button and wait for an identification request.
2.)Give your name and purpose for entering the school.
3.) Access to the front vestibule will be granted.
3.) To enter the school, a second access point is located in the vestibule.
4.)Sign in on the visitor sheet and take a visitor badge.
5.)When leaving the building, return to the office and sign out and return your visitor badge to office personnel.
If you need to drop something off that your child forgot at home, there is a table in the vestibule to leave items. We are happy to take items your child. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us to minimize classroom disruptions.

- If you are taking photos or videos duirng school hours (including class trips and events), please note these are allowed for personal use only. Videos and images should not be shared in any form without appropriate consent from the student's parents/guardian. Obtaining consent is the sole responsibility of the person taking the photos and video.

Celebrating Birthdays At Woodbrook!
Birthdays are important milestones in each child's life. At Woodbrook Elementary, we look forward to sharing in the students' excitement over their own special day. Each morning birthdays will be read over the announcements and students will be invited to come to select a book from the office to keep, compliments of PTO. Summer birthdays will be announced on the students 1/2 birthday to ensure each student enjoys this special recognition during the school year,
If you would like to send a special treat or token for your child to pass out to classmates, please send non-edible tokens or treats (most preferred). If you send an edible treat please send store bought and indvidually packaged treats to be sent home with students at the end of the school day. Please do NOT send donuts or cupcakes or other edible treats that are not individually wrapped. This decision has been made with considerable thought to healthy eating habits, good allergies and convenience for teachers and parents. Cell Phone Expectations
As was shared with all families in an email from Elkhorn Public Schools on July 24, updated cell phone expectations will be implemented at all EPS schools for the 2024-25 school year. Links to our student handbook and the EPS email that was sent to families can be found below.

Elkhorn Public Schools Email sent to all EPS Families on July 24, 2024
Please take a moment ahead of the first day of school to review the updated expectations as outlined in the handbook, and discuss them with your student.
EPS Mass Messaging System
EPS and individual buildings use a parent messaging system called SchoolMessenger to send emails, phone calls, and text messages to parents sharing district information, monthly updates about building happenings, and weather-related school closings. To ensure receipt of these updates, please verify that all contact information listed in your parent PowerSchool account, including phone numbers and email addresses, is up to date and correct.
Additionally, this system allows recipients to “unsubscribe” from its mailing list; however, by “unsubscribing” you are completely removing your email address and phone number from both District and building lists. If you choose to unsubscribe, you will not receive any communication from your child’s assigned school or the EPS District. If you accidentally unsubscribe or decide you would like to begin receiving emails again after unsubscribing, contact your building secretary to change your communication status.
EPS Text Messages
EPS utilizes text messages to efficiently share important information with parents, including weather-related school closings and bus route delays. To receive EPS text messages, please text “Yes” to 67587 to opt in.
