State Testing Attendance
All 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Graders Need to be at School for State Testing.
The formal State Testing (CAASPP) window will be April 21 - May 9. All 3rd-6th graders will be testing. It is very important that all students are present during testing times. If a student is absent, s/he will have to make up the test (missing important classroom instruction). In addition, make-ups are logistically difficult to administer. If you already know of appointments scheduled during testing times, please reschedule them so that everyone is present for testing.
Upcoming Assembly:
We are excited to have Dr. Blake Brandes join our students on April 4th for a fun and engaging presentation about the Growth Mindset. Dr. Brandes is a TEDx speaker, America’s Got Talent contestant, and Marshall Scholar who has spoken to more than 500,000 students around the world. During the presentation, our students will learn how to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams by choosing a Growth Mindset! If you have any questions please let me know, and I'll answer them or run them by Blake as needed. Blake is very excited to see you and your students soon! If you would like to order Blake’s books, check out his site here.

We are excited to see you all at Loyola’s Ice Cream Social, Thursday, April 17, 5:30-6:30PM! This is a FREE Loyola community, sweet and fun event! Ice cream (sorbet for those who are dairy-free) along with a variety of yummy toppings will be served at the lower grades’ blacktop. We hope you can attend this delicious family event! Please RSVP HERE by April 10.
We are also excited to introduce a NEW Loyola family community event! On Saturday, May 10, 5PM, join us at a SAN JOSE GIANTS game! Tickets are $15/person. Purchase tickets HERE. When purchasing tickets, enter “Loyola” on the first page and then select available seats in Section G! We want to make sure that we are all sitting together and so don’t forget to select seats in Section G!
And, we still need someone (or two!) to lead Loyola at the 78th Annual Los Altos Pet Parade, held on Saturday, May 17 in downtown Los Altos. Bring your furry, feathered, and/or scaly friends to downtown Los Altos to march representing Loyola Elementary in the annual pet parade! It is a small role, but we really need someone to chair. Otherwise, Loyola may be the only LASD school not represented (which would be sad ). Please reach out to Christine (ckerbacorbett@gmail.com) if you can lead or if you want more information!
Don’t forget that spring sessions for Loyola’s after school program are open for registration. Please check out this link to sign-up for some exciting learning opportunities. Sign up early because some of these programs may be cancelled if there is not enough interest!
Lastly, follow the Loyola PTA on Facebook as it has a lot of updates about events!

March Mindfulness and Yoga Wrap-up!
This month we focused on the Character Strong trait of “Cooperation: working together to reach shared goals.” We exercised our ability to cooperate through several group games, like “boat package delivery”, crab walking, breathing with the parachute, energy stick connection and partner poses. To find success we had to work together and adapt to our partner’s needs as well as our own.
The Focus Mindfulness Exercise was Dots & Squeezies, a self massage technique which can be used for regulation and to relieve tension. Using your thumb and pointer finger, pinch your palm and fingers to make 10 “dots”, adjusting the amount of pressure to work for you. Next, grasp around your wrist working your way up your arm (avoiding your elbow) for 10 “squeezies” until you reach your shoulder, give yourself a giant hug as you breathe in…..and breathe out as you relax your hands down to your lap. Repeat on the other side. Ask your student to demonstrate!
Our Focus Pose for March was Boat Pose working with a tall spine while twisting from side to side to “row” our boats. Working our strong core muscles.
The 4th-6th graders began journaling time with the usual check in, then were asked to use the following prompts:
- What are you grateful for in your community? (ie: school, after school program, library, sports team, etc.)
- Why is this community special to you?
- Who are the people helping to create this community?
Throughout March encourage your students to continue working on their cooperation and community building skills at home, school and after school. We can’t wait to hear their stories in April! As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
With Warmth,

Thank you to those who’ve collectively given over $2.8M to LAEF this school year! Because of your donations to LAEF, Loyola students have teachers and staff for art, computer science, living classroom, music, library, and mental health counselors.
Let’s finish the job and raise the final $65K to reach our goal of $2.9M to help fund teachers and staff. If you have yet to give this school year, donate to LAEF today and submit for a corporate match if it’s available to you. Gifts of any amount are appreciated!
MARS Assessment 5th & 6th Grade Parent Scorers!

Our scoring day will take place on Saturday, May 17th, from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM and will include teachers, administrators, and parents. This event will be held virtually, allowing you to score from home. As a parent scorer, you'll have an opportunity to see the level of mathematical thinking demonstrated by our students. If you would like to join us, please email Grace Choi, Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction, at gchoi@lasdschools.org.
