Theme Wednesday
Wear your college shirts on Wednesday, September 28th for College Go Week!
End of Quarter 1
Attention all 9th, 10th and 11th grade parents: PSAT Day 10/12
All current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will participate in the PSAT assessments on Wednesday, October 12th. It is very important that your student be present on this day to test. The PSAT is not just for college bound students, but provides free information to students about their career choices (access to a website that correlates scores to occupations) and provides teachers with information on ways to help students achieve more in English and Math classes. Additionally, students who are intending to go to college will have score report information that enables them to focus on areas necessary for success on the SAT.
Parent Teacher Conferences - October 13th and 14th
We are excited to offer parents the opportunity to meet with teachers on October 13th (4:30-8:00pm) and October 14th (8:00am -12:00pm) to discuss their child’s progress, ask questions, or simply meet the teacher(s). Students will not attend school on October 14th.
Please visit https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Shelbyville_High_School_2 to schedule your conferences. After completing the registration form you will receive an email that will send you a direct link to schedule your child’s conferences.
If you do not have online access, or have questions please contact your child’s counselor for help.
Please consider the following prior to requesting your conferences:
× Which class is my child struggling with academically?
× Where do I need the most information?
× Which teacher(s) haven’t I met?
Please don’t forget to meet with elective teachers as they can provide appropriate insight outside of the core academic areas.

College Applications
Apply with no application fee
Check out this website for the colleges and universities which are waiving their application fee during the month of September, College GO! Week (September 26-30), or on Why Apply Day (September 16). Students who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program or are 21st Century Scholars can see their counselor for a college application fee waiver.
SAT and ACT
If your child plans to attend a 4-year college next fall and has not yet taken the SAT or ACT, he/she needs to register online. Both are college admissions exams which are required for admission to a 4-year college or university although some universities are “test-optional” now. Nearly all colleges will accept results from either test. We encourage all students to take each one at least once and repeat the one they are most comfortable with.
Register for the SAT online at https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org and at www.act.org for the ACT.
Seniors, take the SAT/ACT again to improve your scores and increase your chances for financial aid and admission. Juniors, you should take the SAT and ACT twice this year. Don't delay! Sign up now.
Free online test preparation websites include Khan Academy, www.march2success.com and
Fee waivers are available in the counseling office for students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program or are 21 st Century Scholars.
National College Fairs:
The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) invites sophomores, juniors and seniors to attend a National Virtual College Fair. There are 3 virtual fairs scheduled this fall on September 11, October 9, and November 6. Before the fair, go to the NACAC website to register and to check out the college representatives who will be in attendance.
Students can also schedule a virtual or in-person campus visit directly with the school of their choice.
College Representatives:
There are two ways for students to meet with college representatives. First, juniors and seniors are allotted two campus visits per year to tour the campus of their choice. Contact the college admissions office directly to schedule a visit. Pre-arranged absence forms are available in the front office or online and must be completed five days prior to absence.
Secondly, college representatives schedule visits at SHS throughout the fall. The college representatives discuss major areas of study, special programs, application timelines and procedures, scholarships and financial aid, housing and many other important topics. The representatives also answer individual questions that students may have. To see a list of the scheduled college information sessions and register to attend, juniors and seniors should log in to their Naviance account and go to the Colleges>College Visits tab. Students must register at least a day in advance in order to be approved to attend.
Military representatives also visit the high school on a monthly basis. They are usually in the cafeteria at lunchtime to answer students’ questions.
The Carson Scholars Program
The Carson Scholars Program is currently seeking current 9,10,11 grade students who exemplify strong humanitarian qualities and have a minimum 3.75 GPA. The Carson Scholars Program awards $1,000 college scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. Scholarship winners receive the honor of being named "Carson Scholars" and are awarded Olympic-size medals and a trophy for their school to celebrate their accomplishments. Interested students must be nominated by an educator at his or her school. Only one student from each school is able to apply, ensuring that each nominee epitomizes academic excellence. Scholarships are awarded solely based on academic achievement and demonstration of humanitarian qualities, without regard to financial need, ethnicity, creed, or religion. If you would like to be considered for nomination, please stop by the Counseling office to request the Carson Scholars Program packet and sign your name on the form on or before Friday, Oct. 21. The Scholarship Committee will review each candidate to select one nominee. Nominees will be contacted and sent an application to be submitted online. For more information, please visit the Carson Scholars Program online or see Mrs. Decker in the Counseling office.

Attention Scholarship Seekers:
Real Talk
Real Talk events were created to provide Black students and their families with the tools they need to start planning for their future. This fall, we’ll connect attendees with Black college reps across the country, financial aid experts with insider tips on finding scholarships, college students who’ll give your students a realistic view of campus life, and Black professionals in tech, sports, and entertainment.
We’re kicking off the season with Real Talk: HBCU Edition. During this two-night event, your students will have a chance to see the many options there are to choose from. There are more than 100 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), so we’ll help them compare and find the schools that deserve a spot on their college list.
Night 1 on Wednesday, September 28, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, features:
Claflin University
Dillard University
Howard University
Norfolk State University
Spelman College
Night 2 on Thursday, September 29, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, features:
Fayetteville State University
Hampton University
Morehouse College
Morgan State University
Texas Southern University
After this event, students and their families will have a better idea of which HBCUs to consider, and what students will need to start doing to stand out during the application process. Make sure to share this Real Talk event with students and families in your community!
Sincerely,
The Real Talk Team
