Hi Middle School Families,
It has been a busy week at the middle school.
We are happy to announce that homework club is starting next week in the library. Your child can stay from 2:20-3:30 Monday through Friday if they would like a quiet space to do homework. There is a teacher supervising and supporting students.
We have adopted many new High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) this year. This is recommended as best practice for schools and aligns with state standards. Our new Wit and Wisdom Curriculum has been adopted for grades K-8. In this issue is a family video (about 6 minutes long) that explains the curriculum. Also included is information about the rich texts and topics being covered in 7th and 8th grade this year. During our first year, students are completing Modules 0-3 which will cover all the grade level standards.
Currently, our 7th graders are working on Module 1: Identity in the Middle Ages. They are reading The Canterbury Tales and were recently tasked with acting out some of the tales in class.
Our eighth graders are completing Module 1: The Poetics and Power of Storytelling. They are reading the novel Crossover which is a written through poetry. This may give you something to ask your child about, as we know often when students are asked about their day, they do not give many details. The attached information will give you some information as a parent including suggestions for texts that your child can read to expand their knowledge of these themes.
Eighth graders who may be interested in attending Whittier Technical High School are being invited to visit Whittier on Tuesday, November 19th from 8:15-11. A permission slip will be coming home on Monday. A letter explaining the trip is in this issue.
Parent teacher conferences have been moved to Wednesday November 20th from 5-8PM. Teacher will be sending out information shortly so that you can sign up for a time to meet.
