SD American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Contest
The SD American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Contest (about the US Constitution): District Competition will be held in Spearfish at the American Legion Post on Jan 21 at 2:00 pm. If there is more than one student from SBHS, there will be a local competition in Sturgis prior to Jan 21. Please tell Mrs. Kaufman your intention to participate by Dec 1 so arrangements can be made for a local competition if needed. The full details and guidelines are available here: https://www.sdlegion.org/oratorical-scholarship/ .
FFA LDE Contest
Congratulations to the Ag Issues Team, Talia Biscaino, Elizabeth Storm, Ben Storm, Jackson Cammack, Mary Vallette, Allison Ogden, and Jora Schaeffer, for placing 1st and Rowan Lutz placing 3rd in Creed Speaking at the FFA District Leadership Development Events Contest in Wall. All are headed to state in a few weeks.
Through Career and Leadership Development Events, participating FFA members are challenged to develop critical thinking skills and effective decision-making skills, foster teamwork and promote communication while recognizing the value of ethical competition and individual achievement.
CONGRATULATIONS TO STURGIS DEBATE
Congratulations to the Public Forum Debate Team of Hunter Scott and Cade Tallmage for winning the Spearfish Novice Debate Tournament with a undefeated record. Ian Johnson finished third with a 3-1 record. Go Sturgis Debate!
In Public Forum Debate, students work in pairs of two to debate both sides of a topic. Public Forum is one of the most popular events and is a great entry point for new students and judges. Topics are based on current events and change frequently, which gives students the opportunity to learn about a variety of subjects and keeps debates exciting and new. Students present prepared cases, then engage in rebuttal and questioning periods with limited prep.
SBHS EDUCATIONAL TOURS, SUMMER 2025
SBHS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION - DECEMBER 12, 2023
The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization for high school students in the United States and outlying territories, which consists of many chapters in high schools. NHS was founded in 1921. Today, over 1 million students participate in NHS, which has chapters around the world.
NHS emphasizes leadership and service. Members meet standards for character and draw on their leadership experience to contribute to the society.
Selection is based on four criteria: academic achievement, leadership , service , and character. Students must, at a minimum, have a cumulative GPA of a B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence.
Sturgis Brown High School NHS Induction will be December 12 in the West Gym. Direct all questions to Dadra Avery, dadra.avery@k12.sd.us

HEALTHY DEVICES MAKE FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE
Take care of your MacBook during the winter season! Leaving your MacBook in the car overnight can harm its battery. Cold temperatures can decrease the battery life by more than 50% because it permanently damages the charging cells. Here are some other tips to keep your device in good shape all year:
- Protect your screen: Avoid putting papers or other items between the screen and the keyboard. While it might be convenient, your computer isn't a folder, and this can damage your screen.
- Transport your device closed and without accessories attached: When you carry the device by the screen with the keyboard hanging, it damages the hinges and leaves the device vulnerable to impacts. If you leave accessories like the charger or a flash drive plugged in, it damages the ports which means they may stop working.
Restart your computer regularly: To keep your MacBook running smoothly, restart it from time to time. This helps stop background programs, which can slow down your computer and drain the battery.
Charge your device at home: Charging your MacBook at home saves you time and money. Your battery should last around 15-20 hours on one charge, as long as you don't have too many programs running or it froze int he car 🙂. Plus, charging at home helps prevent the need to replace a charger that has been "permanently borrowed," which can cost $50!
Check the handbook for other possible fees you might be responsible for.
- Stay updated with Mosyle: Mosyle Updates come through as banners on your device and allow you to control when software updates happen on your computer. This way, your computer won't shut down unexpectedly for an update -you can choose a time that works for you.
It's always frustrating when your tools stop working, so make these tips a regular practice. Both you and your computer will be happier for it!
