833 Young Scholars
Nurturing Potential, Sustaining Support
October 2019
Happy October Everyone!
It is hard to believe that almost two months have already gone by this school year. Hopefully, by now your Young Scholar has settled into their routine and is finding new and exciting ways to engage their brain each day.
Last month's September newsletter introduced us to the National Association for Gifted Children's (NAGC) publication called Helping Your Gifted Child Succeed!
Each of our monthly newsletters this year will expand on a topic presented in this brochure with the goal of increasing access for you, as parents, to ideas and resources that help guide your Young Scholar along their learning journey.
This month's newsletter will focus on building a Growth Mindset.
Young Scholars works with students, families and schools to increase...
Building a Growth Mindset
Growth Mindset is the belief that learning takes practice, persistence, and hard work. People with a growth mindset see challenges as opportunities to grow instead of signs of failure. They are willing to try something new, make mistakes and try again. To someone with a growth mindset, it's not that "I don't know", it's just that "I don't know yet."
The NAGC brochure Helping Your Gifted Child Succeed! shares the following suggestions for encouraging a growth mindset:
- Emphasize effort and progress rather than perfection
- Show your child how errors can be opportunities to discover and learn
- Model positive ways to address setbacks and solve problems
You can check out our October Resources section below for more information and resources to help your Young Scholar build a growth mindset.

The article The Growth Mindset For Kids- What It Is, Why It Is Important, And Change
found in the Family Focus Blog does a great job of breaking down the ideas behind a growth mindset, explaining why it's so important for children to build one, and sharing ideas for what parents and caregivers can do to help.
The book Hana Hashimoto, Sixth Violin by Chieri Uegaki is a beautiful story about courage and resilience and the importance of practice.
Being willing to learn from mistakes and try again is one of the keys to a growth mindset. In The Book of Mistakes, Corinna Luyken shows readers how the biggest mistakes can often lead to the brightest ideas.
The book Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle is an inspiring story of one girl's determination to live her dream even in the face of challenges.
The classroom management software Class Dojo and Stanford University's Project for Education Research have teamed up to develop a series of short growth mindset videos for kids. Click here for a link to all five videos as well as a description of each from the website seed2stem.

About Me
Hi All!
My name is Colleen Redmond, and I am thrilled to work as the 833 Young Scholars advocate and lead teacher.
I'm a mom of two teenagers, a wife, small business owner, avid biker (the pedal kind), book enthusiast, and beekeeper. Plus, on top of all of that, I have the happy job of implementing and growing the Young Scholars program here in 833!
I've been lucky enough to teach in South Washington County Schools for over twenty-five years and have had the incredible opportunity to be a part of the lives of so many students and families over the years.
Now, as part of Young Scholars, I have the honor of working with the amazing staff, students, and families throughout 833. I am so very excited to work with and support you and your Young Scholar. I can't wait to see where the journey takes us!
