Meet Some Of Our Awesome Staff!
Mr. Martinez
My name is Uby Martinez and I am entering my second year at North Central Middle School, where I teach 8th-grade American Studies. With 27 years of education experience, I spent 25 years teaching elementary school across grades 3 to 5.
In addition to my teaching role, I serve as the varsity baseball coach at Liberty High School and I also coach 8th-grade football at North Central Middle School. I am married to my wife Carrie, who teaches kindergarten in the Iowa City School District, and together we have three daughters aged 19, 15, and 11. I enjoy supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes, fishing, and spending quality time with my family.
Mr. Whittle
My name is Chad Whittle and I am entering my 5th year at North Central and my 19th year in education. I served as a social studies instructor for two years at North Fayette, three years at Twin Cedars, and nine years as a social studies teacher and 7-12 activities director at Starmont. I have coached jr. high basketball for eighteen years and baseball for five years. My wife Angela and I married in 2020 and have a three-month-old daughter named Lucy. I enjoy reading, biking, playing poker, site-directing AAU baseball tournaments, and hanging out with friends and family in my spare time. I grew up on a dairy and hog farm in northeast Iowa (Elkader) where my parents still reside and try to visit as much as time allows.
Ms. Luce
My name is Lauren Luce and I am entering my 5th year teaching! This year I am teaching 6th grade science and social studies. I spent the last four years at Garner teaching Kindergarten and 5th grade before coming to North Central. Outside of school, I love to travel, garden, read and spend time with family and friends. I am an ICCSD graduate and it has been a joy to come full circle teaching in the same district that provided me a wonderful education!
Mrs. Roberts
My name is Amy Roberts. I have been teaching for 21 years. 7 of those were teaching Kindergarten in Kansas City, and the rest teaching 5th and 6th here in the Iowa City district. I am excited to be at North Central this year! I live in North Liberty with my husband, son and step-son. I love being a part of this community. My son went through the North Liberty schools and now plays baseball at Clarke University in Dubuque. My step-son goes to City High and is very involved in band. In my free time I like to watch sports, travel, and snuggle my puppies, Ozzie and Luna.
Mr. Pauley
My name is Tyler Pauley and I am in my 12th year as an educator and 20th working with school age children. Prior to teaching I spent 10 years in the BASPs of ICCSD. I’ve taught 6th grade at Garner Elementary (4 years) and Science & Social Studies (7/8) at North Central (8 years). I’ve coached many athletics at North Central and Liberty High School over the years and will start again here at North Central this year. I just finished my 2nd masters degree in school leadership in the hopes of being a school leader some day. I was born and raised in Iowa City and graduated from Iowa City West High School in 2007. I currently live in Southeast Iowa City with my daughter Cleo (5) and girlfriend Sierra. I am an amateur DYIer, outdoorsman, and working on my health and fitness. I’ve always had a passion for teaching and empowering students to grow and improve as lifelong learners. I love working at North Central and collaborating with the amazing staff to serve the families of the Iowa City Community Schools.
Mrs. Whitlock
My name is Sabrina Whitlock, and this is my first year teaching at North Central. I’ve been teaching 6th grade for 22 years. I started my career teaching in Avondale, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. After two years enjoying the warm weather and palm trees, I returned home to Iowa to teach in the Iowa City School District. I have enjoyed being a part of the North Liberty community for the last 14 years. My husband and I live in Marion with our three kids: Nolan (18), Cole (12) and Everly (7), and spend the majority of our time watching them play baseball, softball, football, or dance.
Mrs. Phillipp's
My name is Christel Philipp. I am entering my 6th year as the School Nurse for North Central Middle School. I started my nursing career in 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospital in their Surgical Intensive Care Unit where I learned all the things nursing school left out! Over the next 14 years I worked in ICU, cardiothoracic surgery, post anesthesia recovery, and Iowa Donor Network. My husband Josh and I love to spend time with our (nearly grown) kids, Jack (20) and Grace (17). I enjoy helping our students learn how to better themselves and become responsible for their own health.
Mrs. Erb
My name is Rachel Erb. This is my first year at NCMS and I’m the Health Office para. This is my 14th year in the district. Previously I worked in preschool. My family consists of my husband and our six kids. Three still live at home and three are out on their own. I enjoy spending my free time with family and all that we do together. I’m excited to be at NCMS in this new role and to meet everyone.
Ms. Chasse

AVID
In AVID students will be learning about college and career readiness. This month they learned about career interest categories, took a few interest surveys to match with careers, and chose one career to research. Then students researched their career using two-column Cornell notes. Using the information from their Cornell notes they created a one-pager project to share with the class. Students were able to go around and view other one-pagers and gather information about a variety of careers. Here are a few career one-pagers from Hex 1 AVID.
6TH Grade Field Trip
6th grade students in Ms. Robert's science class attended a farm to school field trip to the Johnson County Historic Poor Farm on September 17th. This is designed to give students a deeper understanding of the history of agriculture in Johnson County, community farming practices, and the joy of harvesting fresh produce. Other 6th grade students will have the opportunity to go at later dates this year.

ATTENDANCE:
Attendance Procedures for North Central Middle School:
If your student is going to be late to school, needs to leave school early or will be absent from school, please make sure you have reported this to the NCMS Attendance Office by 9:00am on the day of the absence. You may call the attendance line at 319-688-1210 or enter the absence in the Attendance Request section of Infinite Campus. Please give the date(s) and reason for the absence. (**Early releases requested in Infinite Campus must be done at least 2 hours before the student is to leave NCMS)
If a student needs to leave school early, please give the time the student is to be picked up from NCMS. Your student will be given a pass to leave their class and meet parents/guardians in the main office. Students are not permitted to leave class until the parent/guardian has contacted the attendance office directly.
Communicating absences to teachers directly or texting your student is not considered a communicated absence. The attendance office must be made aware of all absences.
Please note: Parents/Guardians will now be receiving automated attendance calls at the end of each period a student has an uncommunicated absence.
STUDENT DROP OFF
Students are not allowed access to the building before 8:30am. Students wanting to meet with teachers, must get permission from the teacher prior to the meeting, to be let in to the building before 8:30am. The office will not allow students in to the building before that time unless notification from the teacher has been given to the main office. Students will not be allowed up to meet with teachers before 8:15am unless that has also been clearly communicated with office staff.
Chromebook Expectations
At North Central, a major component of being READY to learn is having a charged chromebook at school every day. Please discuss this with your student and create a plan for ensuring your student charges their chromebook each night and brings it to school each day. We have charging carts in the Library and Bolt Space if students need to charge their device during the school day
Food and Drink
All food and drink, other than water bottles, must remain in the cafeteria. You may not consume food in your classrooms, unless it is provided by a specific teacher for their class only. There is to be no food or drink in hallways or classrooms. Only water bottles may be taken in hallways and to classrooms. If a staff member sees you with food or any drinks other than water, you will be instructed to throw the item away.
CELL PHONE POLICY
Cell Phone/Personal Technology Policy & Confiscation Procedures
Cell phones: Students may use cell phones during passing time and at lunch while school is in session. All phones must be put away, and ringers silenced before entering the classroom. Phones in use or view during class time may be confiscated by staff (this includes using phones to listen to music). Students who refuse to comply will be subject to additional school consequences. Additionally, students are not allowed to have headphones/earbuds on or in their ears during class. At North Central Middle School the following steps will be used to enforce the policy:
1. At the beginning of class all teachers/staff will say “secure your phones”
2. Students should have their phones put away and out of sight.
3. If the phone is out or being used, the teacher will confiscate the phone and deliver it to the main office where it will be secured until the end of the day.
4. If a student is refusing to give up his/her cell phone a counselor or administrator will be called and escort the student to the office where the phone will be secured.
5. If a student’s cell phone/device is confiscated three (3) different times, it will be held at school until a guardian comes to school to pick it up. A conference will be requested with student/guardian/admin to discuss possible solutions and/or additional consequences such as:
a. Multiple-day cell/device detention;
b. Trimester long cell/device detention;
c. Yearlong cell/device detention
