HONORING 09.11.2001: A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE & RESILIENCE
On the morning of September 11, 2001, the worst terrorist attack in American history occurred when four commercial airliners were hijacked. Two planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and another into a field in Pennsylvania. The first two fighter jets on the scene were from Otis Air Force Base, Cape Cod.
Sandwich High School alumnus, Captain Gerald F. DeConto, was killed in the attack on the Pentagon. The SMHS DeConto Stadium is named in his honor. There is also a piece of steel from the south tower of the World Trade Center near the flagpole as a reminder of that tragic day. Captain Gerald F. DeConto’s memory remains alive at SMHS.
