Red River Newsletter
January 2020
Happy 2020 Rider Families! We hope you and your family had a relaxing holiday season.
As the 2019-2020 school year moves forward, we have a number of upcoming activities. The first semester will end on Friday, January 10. Students will be taking their semester exams Thursday and Friday, January 9 & 10. On these days we will follow our semester test schedule, which is included in the newsletter. Later in the third quarter our sophomore and junior students will be participating in the PreACT, NDSA Science and ACT assessments. Testing will occur between the dates of Mar. 3 – Apr. 3. You will also be receiving additional information as we move closer to the testing window.
We are beginning to plan for the 2020-21 school year. Freshman, sophomores, and juniors will be registering for next year’s classes in January and February. Registration for classes will be done online. An email with a guide sheet on the registration process will be emailed to all families. We do have our course description book online at our school website: https://www.gfschools.org/redriver under the students tab to assist in the selection of classes.
In January and February sophomores are scheduled for individual conferences with their counselor and parents/guardians. A letter with the date and time of these conferences was mailed in December. Sophomores should complete their online registration before this meeting. Our counseling department will also be doing classroom presentations for our freshman and juniors related to schedules and course offerings. Students will then have an individual conference with their counselor.
The winter months provide an opportunity to see students perform in a variety of extra and co-curricular activities. Please make time to get out and support the Roughriders of Red River High School.
Thank you for your continued support of Red River High School.
Sincerely,
Mr. Darin J. Walters
Associate Principal

DECA
On the weekend of December 6th-8th, 20 students from Red River High School traveled to Minneapolis to compete in Central Region Leadership Conference. This conference hosted over 1000+ students from thirteen different states in the central region. This conference had a lot of new exciting things for our students including, chapter leadership trainings, interactive workshops, business tours, exhibit booths from many different places, a hypnotist, and sessions filled with entertainment and more!
This conference is set up to meet the needs of dedicated DECA members and is all business. Along with the conference our students got to go on a tours of many different places that make Minneapolis a great place! They got to see firsthand the US bank stadium and Target field tour on sports & entertainment marketing! They expanded their knowledge on event marketing while seeing new things! This was a great experience for our students to learn more, meet new people, and have lots of fun!
HOSA
HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) has been off to a great start this school year! Nine officers were elected this year from within the Medical Careers class. Braelyn Liang will serve as this year’s President, along with Emma DeMott and Morgan Halliday as Vice Presidents, Dani Mach as Secretary, Olivia Boen as Treasurer, Greta Amundson as Reporter, Kamilla Pedersen as Historian, Anna Robinson as Parliamentarian, Ashlea Lindseth as Student Representative, and Conner Arel and Brady Dvorak as the Sergeants of Arms. The first HOSA meeting was held on September 25. The students at the meeting were informed about how to become a member of HOSA and were asked to come up with different ideas for fundraising and special events.
On September 24, HOSA students from the Medical Careers class presented projects about personal hygiene to students at Community High School and the School for the Blind. Students presented on topics such as showering, laundry, oral care, and many others. The students from Community High School seemed to really appreciate these presentations from the HOSA students.
Medical Career students have been learning about infection control, so as a part of their learning experience they got to take a tour around the Central Sterile department at Altru Hospital. HOSA students got to learn about the importance of keeping instruments sterile for the protection and safety of patients. They also learned what an important role infection control plays in a patient’s care.
HOSA students are very excited for this upcoming year. They have many different ideas for events and fundraisers. The officers are currently planning to go to the upcoming HOSA conference that will be held in Grand Forks.
