Summer Break Learning Opportunities
Summer break is a great time to encourage reading and keep kids engaged. Here are some fun and educational summer reading ideas for kids in grades K-5:
Book-Based Summer Reading Activity Calendars: Enjoy minimal prep and low-stress activities with your little ones. Each week features a new summer theme, along with recommended books and five different activities to do together. You can find printable resources for this on Growing Book by Book.
Book Dives: Dive deep into a book with activities before, during, and after reading. Explore vocabulary, comprehension, and hands-on literacy experiences. Book Dives are available for titles like “Hey, Water!” and “Rainbow Stew” for ages 3-5.
Library Adventure Challenges: Make library visits exciting! Try the nine super fun challenges for finding new books at the library. You can do these in any order and as often as you want over the summer.
The Great Library Summer Challenge: For an extra challenge, explore fiction, non-fiction, and resource books. What Do We Do All Day? and No Twiddle Twaddle have created this joint project with two levels of challenges for each idea. Start your Great Library Summer Challenge on a week of your choosing.
ABC Summer Bucket List: Let the alphabet inspire your summer days! Each day, enjoy an activity and read a corresponding book together as a family. For example, “A” is for making art outside while reading “I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More!” Explore all 26 ABC Summer Fun activities and books.
Family Dinner Book Club: Hold a Family Dinner Book Club each month during the summer. A new book is announced on Growing Book by Book on the 1st of each month. It’s a great way to combine reading and family time.
Remember, the goal is to make reading enjoyable and foster a love for books. Happy summer reading! 📚😊
