Cobra Strike
From the Desk of the Junior/Senior High School Principal
"Five more weeks" Coach Nilges
And that's a wrap on regular season. And what a wrap it was. With that win against JCN, the Cobras clinch both the NEK league title and the District 3 Title. It was great to see the smile on the mens faces after the game. I was glad to see them enjoy and celebrate the achievement. One that hasn't been done since 2018. They deserve to celebrate. It has been an absolute delight to watch the team play this year. One of the things I love most is that, more often than not, what I am seeing is genuine sportsmanship on the field on the part of our Cobras. When our guys get a great, they pick the other guy up, dust them off and run back to the huddle. It's about the game itself, not a show. When we score a touchdown, there are high fives and then they run back to the huddle and get ready for the next play. That makes me proud to wear the green and gold every day.
As the Coaches said in the circle Friday night, we are now home for the next four weeks as we have also clinches the number one seed in the playoffs. Now they turn their focus onto Erie next Friday as Playoffs begin. While we take these one game at a time. I say lets keep this train running all the way to Hutchinson in late November. While we are excited about all of this, there is still a lot of other things going on as well. There is a lot of school between now and then as well as several other activities. We will talk about several of those below as well as some other items to discuss.

“The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” – John Bingham
A lot of tears yesterday. A lot of tears. While this pictures isn't from yesterday (in fact its from an older meet from a few years ago that I got from Brandi), but this picture sums up what a cross country runner is in so many ways. They are pushing themselves beyond their physical boundaries every single time they hit a course. With every step, their bodies are telling them to stop, but they keep going. Runners always get excited to tell me about how they beat their own best times. Here is Emi running in mud and muck and I bet her body is in pain and her whole being is telling her to stop, but she kept on going, like the trooper that she is.
As for yesterday, not a single runner walked off of the course mad that they didn't qualify for state or bitter that someone else had. They all came off happy that they finished the race and they gave it their all. The ladies ran a great race and Sofia Ivy even finished 9th qualifying her for the state run next week. Each one of them had hugs for each other with tears in their eyes that it was the last run as a complete team as Emirson Fritz and Abby Wellman had just ran their last run as a Cobra. It was incredible to watch these ladies for the past three years do their thing. I will miss them on the course next year.
And then the boys go. They had a great run too. Many of them havign their best runs of the whole year. Korbin Karns pulled out his best run by far in his last run of his senior year, barely missing the mark to make it to the state run next week. However, the whole team finishes so well that we hold our breath in anticipation that we might be one of the three teams that finished fast enough to go as a team. As the announcer calls out Jackson Heights....4th place....missed it by one point. While that was a heart break, and we lose Korbin next year, the team has steely resolve in their eyes to come back next year even stronger.
Now I said Sofia made it, that means Cross country isn't done yet. We still have one lady doing her thing for one more week. Coach Keehn and Coach Lierz have some work to do. Lets get this girl in top shape for next Saturday as she will take on the course as the lone representative for JH at Wamego. Let's go Sofia!

Cobra Cup House Events
This week we will have multiple house day events where we will begin to transition to another core value that is to Be Kind. A way we will do this is by using a bulletin board in the hall of the south wing where students will be able to write on a piece of paper an example of when they witnessed an act of kindness and put them up on the board for everyone to see.
Cobra Cup: House Points
Some spotlight students in each house this week were:
House Corn Fed Cobra: Owen Shughart For volunteering to help Troy to build tables.
House Gold Rush: Sabrina Streeter For remaining positive when a new assignment was given and trying to encourage class to recognize the benefit of the assignment.
House Snake Kingz: Matthew Devader For creating labels for the geocaching work for both classes for Mr. Henry.
House Triple G: Paisley Askren For writing positive quotes for the ENTIRE girls basketball team (without being asked)

In addition to all of the other fun things surrounding halloween, I also love pumpkin carving. Britt and I have never missed a year to carve pumpkins together in the 12 years we have been together. I keep getting more and more elaborate with my designs. Here are the two I did this year. Crazy Eyes and the demented pig. The boys have a blast doing it too. This year was the first year that both of them made good pumpkins that actually had faces and they weren't just mangling holes into their pumpkins but actual faces.
