CHS student named finalist in "Dollars for Dreams" competition
Chardon High School student Tallon Rice’s entrepreneurial talents were on display as he was named a top five finalist in Lakeland Community College’s Dollars for Dreams competition on Nov. 11.
The competition was open to all Lakeland students and Tallon, who pitched his business Fire & Ice pretzels, was the only high school student to be chosen as a top five finalist. Tallon, a junior at CHS, is a Lakeland student by virtue of his enrollment in College Credit Plus business classes taught by Mr. Al Herner.
"I am proud of Tallon's poise and professionalism in presenting his business in front of so many people, including the high profile judges,” Mr. Herner said.
Tallon has been developing his pretzel business since he was in second grade. He uses an original recipe created by his grandfather.
Tallon credits his mother as his biggest supporter throughout his business journey.
Through the competition, Tallon was awarded a cash prize of $375 as well as a membership to the Willoughby and Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce. He plans to put the prize money back into his business and plans to use the chamber membership as a tool for networking and access to facilities to grow the business.

Chardon Middle School attends STEM goes Red event in Cleveland
Chardon Middle School was one of 30 Northeast Ohio schools to recently participate in the STEM Goes Red for Girls event at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland.
STEM Goes Red for Girls — sponsored by the American Heart Association — is an annual event which promotes young women entering scientific fields of study.
CMS students at the event were immersed in a variety of exciting opportunities. They had the chance to speak with women in STEM fields who encouraged them to consider similar careers. They also interacted with students from other area schools while completing several engaging, inquiry-based activities.
Jeremy's Kids 2024 Fundraiser Launched
Chardon High School has launched the Jeremy’s Kids 2024 holiday fundraiser.
Funds collected will be used to purchase holiday gifts for local families in need.
Jeremy’s Kids was established in 2001 in memory of Jeremy Mizen, son of Chardon High School science teacher Rob Mizen and his wife Dee Mizen. Jeremy tragically passed away in 1999 at the age of 6 after suffering head trauma from a car accident en route to a Christmas Eve church service.
Among the CHS students who gain service experience through this yearly endeavor are the high school’s service classes, as well as Interact Club, National Honor Society and Actively Caring for People Club.
In over 20 years of giving back to the community, the fundraiser has raised over $130,000.
Anyone interested in supporting the Jeremy’s Kids annual holiday fundraiser can visit this year’s GoFundMe donation page, linked in the button below!
