Senior Seminar Speakers
Oakland University
by Keira Miller
On September 19th we had a speaker come in who was an admissions counselor at Oakland University. Her name was Jessie Gutierrez-Arredondo. She talked a lot about the foundation at Oakland and why we should apply to go there. Some benefits when you apply are there is no required SAT score and you don’t need to submit an essay.
I enjoyed listening to this speaker because she didn’t have a whole presentation planned out, she knew everything she wanted to say in her head. Listening to long boring presentations usually makes students lose interest and stop listening. She also asked lots of questions to us even if we did not answer them. You are allowed to have your car on campus for free which is a huge thing for most students when they’re deciding on what college they want to attend.
The downside of Oakland to me is the sizes of their dorms, to me they are just a little too small for me. Being so close to your roommate would be fun at first, but then over time you would definitely get tired of them and arguments could start. Overall, I really think the speaker from Oakland University was a very good speaker and she gave us lots of information about Oakland, including the benefits, the programs they have, their meal plans, free parking, and all the sports teams.
Northern Michigan University
by Liam Napolitano
The speaker for 9.20 was Kim Randolph. Raised in a small town that isn’t dissimilar from Dryden, she went to Northern Michigan University in seek of a degree in the field of environmental science—I’m unsure which degree and major in particular it was. She later became a representative there with a job as the Assistant Director of Admissions.
What I liked about Kim Randolph’s speech is that, for one, it filled the entirety of the hour, which I haven’t seen thus far, and she incorporated our questions into her presentation in that time. For instance, I had submitted one about what counseling they have for the undecided. She answered it by going into a personal story about how she had wanted to adjust her path when she faced a challenging time with a course in Chemistry that she dropped because of its difficulty for her, only to fail it upon retaking it (the story wasn’t meant to be inspirational) with the guidance of a counselor that’s paid for with the cost of tuition. In addition, she spread her knowledge through her personal experience being a student at Northern Michigan University and that answered any of the further questions that I may have had, making what might have otherwise been unsolicited oversharing insightful.
That was my speaker review for Kim Randolph from Northern Michigan University. To show her effectiveness, I have applied to the school and I’m expecting an update on my admission!
