MPS Elementary Science for November & December 2022
Instructional Focus: Developing and Using Models
As we spoke about on Coordinator Day, we are focusing on a different Science and Engineering Practice each month. For November we are focusing on the following: Developing and Using Models.
Instructional Strategy: Developing and Using Models
Modeling is part of learning from day one, and we use it throughout our lives. How can you make it part of your class? Below is a SHORT article about using models to teach science.
Try this instructional strategy to help developing modeling skills in your class: Make it Concrete

Science Interactives and December Activity Calendar
This is actually housed in the Discovery platform, but it it can elevate your Mystery Science Lessons.
Discovery has itneractives that you can use for PK -2.
- Classifying animals
- Design an animal's environment
- Sorting food
- Sorting seasons
Discovery Resources (PK - 6)
Winter Celebrations
Discovery has ready-to-go Winter Holiday Celebrations activities:
Light celebrations, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, among others.
International Mountain Day (Dec. 11)
Witness how Earth changes—all around you, and all the time! With its enormous masses of rock and large oceans of water, Earth’s surface may seem unchanging. Yet all rocks are eventually broken up, and water is constantly moving from one place to the next.
First Day of Winter
Discover a collection of videos, images, songs, and writing prompts that explore the science behind the seasons and their environmental effects.
Fabulous Finds
Explore.org
This fabulous find from Aimee Followwell from Broadmoore Elementary. Explore.org is a wonderful way to engage students in LIVE happenings in the animal world and different ecosystems. This site has live cams exploring Africa, Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oceans, Channel Islands, farms, animal rescues - you name it. Want to look at underwater animals like sharks and whales ? They have it. What to look at bears or birds? They have it. Alligators, bison, bees, wolves, gorillas, elephants? They have those too. They even have free lesson plans to go along with their live feeds.
It is a goldmine of LIVE animals and ecosystem action! Thank you, Aimee, for sharing this with us.
Holiday Science
Holiday and Winter Investigations
The three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas break can be a little rough. Let's make it fun with some hands-on holiday science!
Science Olympics
Science Olympics is Back!
Science Olympics is back on for the 22-23 school year. Please familiarize yourself with the handbook and your grade level competition. Below are short videos about each event. YOU WILL NEED TO WATCH THESE as they replace an mandatory training.
Curriculum Materials
MPS Science Resources
Resources for your classroom
Did you know our science department has resources for you to have and some that you can borrow? The following are all available for check-out:
Mineral Kits
Rock Kits
Fossil Kits
Planetarium
Need some materials for a science activity? We can do that too! Please allow at least a week for common materials and longer for specialty materials.
Children's Books - All About Landforms!
Landforms
Did you know that there are specific months that we celebrate particular landforms? Celebrating Earth's beautiful and unique landforms around the world, these monthly holidays were designated to recognize, showcase and bring awareness to the landforms of earth.
For November: Canyons, gorges, and ravines
For December: Mountains
The Adventures of Salt and Soap
Salt and Soap are two little pups who have an adventure of a lifetime after hiking a trail leading into the Grand Canyon. Their adventure continues as they end up on a rafting trip traveling on the Colorado River. The river trip stops at a ranger station at Phantom Ranch where the pups then spend a week exploring the area. They eventually hitch a ride out of the Canyon by helicopter and are dropped off at the South Rim of the Canyon. One of the rangers from Phantom Ranch adopts the pups and they become permanent residents of Grand Canyon National Park.
The Adventures of Salt and Soap at Grand Canyon is based off true events. You can watch a presentation by the author on YouTube. The clip includes history about the Grand Canyon and about how her book came to fruition. The three part presentation includes great information about the Grand Canyon, photos of the real Salt and Soap and a reading of the story. This story is a personal favorite of many river guides when it comes to Grand Canyon Kids Books! Written by Lori Rome and illustrated by Tanja Bauerle.

Good Night Mountains
Good Night Mountains features waterfalls, glaciers, alpine lakes, the Rocky Mountains, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Ozark Mountains, the Sierra Nevadas, the Appalachian Mountains, volcanic Mount Saint Helen, skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, and rock climbing. This mountainous board book allows young children to explore all beauty and fun activities associated with mountain life. Little ones will gain new appreciation for mother nature in all her glory.
This book is part of the bestselling Good Night Our World series, which includes hundreds of titles exploring iconic locations and exciting themes.
Whose Tail on the Trail at Grand Canyon
Whose Tail on the Trail at Grand Canyon is a cute book! It is about the animals a visitor may encounter on a visit to the Grand Canyon. A family begins a hike along the rim overlooking the gigantic Grand Canyon. They encounter many familiar tails along the trail such as desert cottontail and mule deer. As the family descends into the Canyon, they happen upon more tails on the trail. The author incorporates many recognizable Grand Canyon sites within the illustrations. You will see the Kolb Studio, Bright Angel Trail, Colorado River, river rafters and Phantom Ranch. The front and the back of the book is papered with Grand Canyon animal footprints that are identified for the reader’s enjoyment. Written by Midji Stephenson and illustrated by Kenneth Spengler.

Drawing the connection between language and science is easier than you might think! Watch Reading and ELD Specialist and HMH Into Science author, Marjorie Frank, for an edWebinar that offers science instruction strategies, practices, and approaches that integrate active reading, writing, and communication strategies into the flow of science learning.
Viewers will learn about:
- A variety of interactive activities
- A rationale for integrating ELA experiences into science instruction
- Processes and procedures for integrating ELA experiences into science instruction
- A simple and straightforward hands-on activity that will be used as a launch point for a lesson plan.
Establishing a Culture of Figuring Out in Your Next Generation Science Classroom
In this recorded edWebinar, explore ways to cultivate curiosity and value student voice while utilizing the structures and content from phenomena-based, literacy-rich science curricula designed for the Next Generation Science Standards. Watch Rebecca Abbott, Professional Learning Lead from UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science, to consider how to elevate your science implementation by establishing a culture of figuring out.
