WEEKLY UPDATE FROM THE PRINCIPAL-SEPTEMBER 6, 2024
MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES
As we process the news of another school shooting - the latest one in Georgia - I'm sharing a list of resources that Oakland Schools' mental health personnel have compiled. These events, no matter how far away, tend to reactivate gun violence survivors and school communities that have experienced gun violence. Should your district decide to send information to staff and families on how to talk to your children about gun violence, please feel free to share the following resources in your communications.
- For Teens: Coping after Mass Violence
- Talking to Children about Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers
- Parent Guidelines for Helping Youth after the Recent Shooting
- Supporting children's mental wellness: Tips for families and caregivers
Comprehensive list for school staff to review for supportive resources: Supporting Students, Staff, Families, and Communities Impacted by Violence
Thank you to Oakland Schools Director for Communications Services Sheri Stuart Collins for sharing this list of resources.
MONDAY NIGHT PHONE CALLS
Parents will receive a Monday night phone call if a student is failing any class as of Monday morning. This will occur every week of the school year. If you receive this call, please talk with your child. Ask to see your child's grades in Canvas or log into Canvas yourself.
1. What work is your child missing?
2. What is your child struggling with?
3. Does your child need to complete missing work from being absent?
4. Does your child need to meet with Mrs. Dawson to get extra assistance?
Email or call Mrs. Dawson, the School Counselor, if you do not know how to help your child with failing grades. jdawson@watervlietps.org.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
There will be a school store in Dr. Mosher’s room this year. It will be open before school, after 1st hour, and after school.
Just a reminder that automated alert phone calls are now going home daily to parents for any student who is tardy to any class.
There is a permission slip in the counseling office for an Oct 4th field trip to The Maximum Mold Group in Benton Harbor. Juniors and Seniors interested in Engineering, Tooling, Machine Technology, and welding are encouraged to attend. The bus leaves at 9:15 and you will be back by 11:45.
If you are interested in participating in Esports, please sign up in the office or contact Mrs. Overacker. Practices will start this week.
FROM THE CLASS OF 2026
ALL FRESHMEN HAVE ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOKS!
All freshmen have assignment notebooks to be carried daily from class to class. Freshmen teachers will pause class in order for your child to write down needed information regarding homework. If your child loses his/her assignment notebook, he/she should pick up a new one in the main office. Ms. Powers will be randomly rewarding freshmen who can show that they are writing in and using their assignment notebook.
DUAL ENROLLMENT HAS BEGUN!
Ms. Powers met with all dual enrolled students this week to review the expectations for a successful semester.
If you have a child who is currently dual enrolled, please review the following expectations with your child.
We are aiming for an 100% success rate!
Students are expected to be in their dual enrolled class everyday and on time. If for any reason your child needs to be absent from his/her dual enrolled class, he/she needs to make his/her college teacher aware in advance. Your child’s college teacher has given your child his/her contact information.
Students are expected to be in and remain in the online lab or designated classroom when they are not in their dual enrolled class but in school during the dual enrolled time. They are expected to be working in their dual enrolled course while they are in the online lab/classroom. They are not permitted to leave the online lab/classroom during this time unless they get permission from the main office.
Students are expected to email or talk to their dual enrolled teacher anytime they have questions or concerns about the course. They should get to know their instructor early and understand how to reach their course instructor when needed.
Students earning less than a C in a dual enrolled course are not permitted to take a dual enrolled course the following semester at the expense of the school district. They are also required to reimburse the district for the cost of the course.
Students who are not able to maintain positive school attendance are not permitted to dual enroll again in future semesters.
Students are not permitted to drop their dual enrolled course without talking to the counseling office first. If a student feels that he/she is doing poorly in his/her class, he/she should come talk to the counseling office right away.
Students who withdraw from the college course outside of the allowable withdrawal window will be expected to reimburse the school for the cost of the course and will not be permitted to dual enroll the following semester at the cost of the school district.
Students are expected to keep parents up to speed on their grade and how they are doing in their dual enrolled course. There should be no surprises at the end of the course regarding whether your child passed or failed. Students are required to make the counseling office aware of their college course/s grade as requested.
If the school has rented the book for your child, your child is required to return the book to the school at the end of the semester.
Any speeches or assessments that your students need to do, must be done during the time of your student’s dual enrolled class. Students are not permitted to come out of other classes to do this work on dual enrolled coursework. Students are also not permitted to pull other students out of other classes for any reason.
The grade for the dual enrolled class will go on your child's COLLEGE TRANSCRIPT. Your child does not want to start college with any failing grades.
Finally, dual enrolled courses are not high school classes. The ownership of the class is on the student. Students are expected to complete all of the assigned work to their best ability and take ownership of the class, the work, and their progress. If you have any question or concern about dual enrollment expectations, please feel free to contact the counseling office. After reviewing these expectations, and signing your name in agreement indicating that you have read and reviewed these expectations with your high schooler, please return this form to the counseling office.
WHAT'S UP THIS WEEK IN SPANISH CLASSES?
Spanish 1 & 2 students celebrated coming back to school by making piñatas. We learned that piñatas have a huge Mexican history, but were originally made in China and out of clay pots!
We have also studied a Spanish Festival called La Tomatina. Ask your student about it, we had fun!
STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MRS. DAWSON, SCHOOL COUNSELOR
My family consists of my husband of seventeen years, Stephen, my son who is a 7th grader, Braidyn, and our family dog, Max. This is my fifteenth year in education, and my sixth year of serving as the High School Counselor here at Watervliet High School. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Special Education from Western Michigan University and a Master's in School Counseling from Grand Valley State University. Additionally here at Watervliet, I serve as co-advisor for the High School Chapter of National Honor Society alongside Mrs. O'Toole. As co-advisor of NHS I support many student-led initiatives throughout each school year like blood drives, pancake breakfasts, soup kitchens, and Homecoming festivities. Outside of school I enjoy running, weight lifting, reading, cooking for my family, and supporting my son at his many sporting events. One of the things I enjoy the most about my role as School Counselor is getting to help students develop their personal definitions of success and supporting them as they take steps to achieve their goals. Every day in my role is different from the next which makes this job exciting and challenging. Furthermore, I enjoy having the opportunity to team up with Mrs. Tyler in supporting students in any way that we can. I am proud to be a Panther because of our student focused approach to education!
FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR!
Can you believe that we are already a few weeks into the fall athletic season?!? When sports roll around so do the opportunities to volunteer with the booster club!
The Watervliet Athletic Boosters supply concessions for all home events but cannot do so without volunteers. Please consider helping out a couple of times over the course of the fall season. Last year the boosters brought in nearly $30,000 to support our Panthers. Without volunteers the boosters cannot open for events. Come be apart of something great!

Many of the students on the team have served multiple years. Ms. Powers appreciated their feedback and participation. This week, the team reviewed the master schedule, reviewed the purpose of board policy, ands shared concerns with the Principal that they would like to see addressed.
