NOHL CANYON ROADRUNNER NEWS

Thank you for taking time this past week to connect with your child's teacher during parent conference week. The support you provide your kiddos and our school is very much appreciated and plays a great part in the success of our students.

This week, Roadrunners experienced their first Art Masters of the year, lecture and classroom experience. We appreciate the generosity of our families that allow our students to have access to wonderful programs like this.

The month of October is dedicated to Kindness month. Friendship is the focus of our John Wooden Character trait for the month. Unity will be the theme of this coming week. All students are encouraged to wear Orange on Friday in support of Unity week. See details below for the Unity Poster Contest opportunity.

We hope to see all families on October 18th for NC Movie Night. All NC families are welcome. We ask that all minors attending the event be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire evening.

While spots are filling fast, we hope to have another great turnout on the 19th for Dad's Club Poker at the Villa Park City Hall.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month! Our students are learning about conflict resolution, what bullying is (and is not), and how to stop bullying. On Friday, October 18th, students and staff are encouraged to wear orange for Unity. Orange is a color commonly identified with October and the autumn season. It is also a color that is associated with safety and visibility. It is a color described as warm and inviting, and its vibrancy makes an impactful statement.

Bully Prevention poster contest! Any student can participate! Posters can be any size, any and all colors, and must have a welcoming message or kind statement for everyone to see (ex. "You've got this!", "You are loved!", "You rock!", "It's a beautiful day to be RAD!", etc.). Posters will be due by Friday, October 18th. Your teacher will collect them and turn them in.

This month our Recess Rangers pushed in to classrooms to help students learn tools for working through playground conflicts as well as to discuss our "No, Go, Tell" format to help support students having difficulties on the playground.

Our NC Recess Rangers (Volunteer Upper Grade Students) also spend a significant amount of time on our Primary Grade and TK/Kinder playgrounds wear bright colored vests helping students have a positive play experience. Way to go Recess Rangers!

FRIENDSHIP - “To make friends, be a friend.”

To make a friend you must be a friend. Friends are your family, teammates, classmates and workmates. They help you succeed and achieve your goals. Friendship is mutual. It is not a one way street. Good friends do good things for each other.

At the end of each month, students will be nominated by their teachers and receive principal recognition for their dedicated efforts.

GATE screening is coming Jan 27-Feb 7, 2025 for our 3rd Grade students. 2nd and 4th-6th Grade students are also eligible for GATE screening (Jan 27-Mar 21, 2025). Save the Date - Come join us for the Villa Park High Feeder School Appreciation Night. Tickets to the game will be coming to the NC Office soon, first come, first served. Limit one ticket per child/adult while supplies last.

Nohl Canyon Elementary School has continuing members for our Schoolsite Council (SCC) for the 2024-25 school year. Members of the SSC include the principal, classroom teachers, other staff members, and parents. Members of the SSC are elected by their peers to serve a two-year term. Our 23-24 members will be in the second year of their term this year. Elections for SSC will be held again next school year. Congratulations and a big thank you to our elected members!

Outdoor Ed week is coming, November 18 - 22. A special thanks to our 6th grade teachers (Ms. Donaldson, Ms. McCullough, Ms. Mai) for their support of this meaningful experience. Steve Benz from ECOS Institute will be with us on the evening of Thursday, September 12th to give a presentation about ECOS and the 6th Grade experience at Outdoor Ed. We hope you can join us.

Nohl Canyon uses a "Staggered" Start and dismissal to provide some relief with traffic. Supervision in front of school begins at 7:45 am. After dismissal, supervision ends at 2:40 pm. All students need to be picked up by 2:40 pm.

If you are interested in helping with our student drop-off or pick-up, we always welcome volunteers. Work as many or as few days as you are able, morning and/or afternoon. All helpers welcome! Stop by and talk with us in the morning or afternoon or let our Front office staff know if you are interested.

Thank you for making our parking lot procedures during drop-off and pick-up a safe and efficient machine. We serve a large number of vehicles in a short period of time.

Thank you for your continued help with a few critical items:

• Supervision is provided 15 minutes before the start of school and 15 minutes after student release. Any earlier or later drop-off or pick-up needs should contact CARES if added supervision is needed.
• Please remember our Lower lot (including angled spaces in front of the office) is Staff Only Parking. The lower entrance on Nohl Canyon RD is ENTRANCE ONLY in the Afternoon for Middle Lane traffic going to park in the FAR lot. Two-way use of this entrance presents a significant hazard to entering cars and pedestrian traffic.
• Please do not park in designated Reserved Spaces (Staff/CARES/Handicap).
• Please be kind to our parking lot volunteers. They make the whole thing work.
• Please ask your kiddos to walk when in front of school. Running children in the pick up area presents several hazards. Safety is our first priority.
• Trinity School Parking Lot is CLOSED for drop-off and pick-up parking.

• Parents, with respect to Trinity Pre-School and their families, we are not allowing Nohl Canyon families to park in the Trinity parking lot. Please follow this guideline and support us in keeping a positive community relationship with Trinity School. Trinity will often allow us to use their lot for special events but should not be used for drop-off or pick-up.
• Please remain clear of the Trinity lawn areas. Trinity lawns should not be used for students waiting for drop-off or pick-up. Students should always be picked up from our school site. If students are still here after 2:40pm, we bring them behind our school gates into our QUAD area for safety until parent pick-up. Please do not have your students wait at the Trinity site for pick-up.
• Please be sure to use crosswalks when crossing all major roads. Students being dropped off on Nohl Canyon Rd. and then proceeding across the street, presents a significant hazard to those students.
• Keep in mind, the Nohl Canyon Rd. entrance to our parking area is only to be used during afternoon pick-up and is limited to Middle Lane traffic that is pulling all the way through the lot to park in the back school lot.

Nohl Canyon allows Free Dress on the final Friday of each month. Tops should be of a size to allow for freedom of movement to accommodate physical education and active, safe play with no undergarments showing.

Bottoms - Uniform bottoms are to be any type* of solid bottoms with no holes, stripes, or patterns. Colors are Black, Blue, Khaki, uniform plaid. Shorts should be of Bermuda style to help protect skin during active play. Bottoms should be of a size to allow for freedom of movement to accommodate physical education and active, safe play with no undergarments showing.

*Sweatpants not allowed

Shoes - Shoes should be closed toe with non-slip soles and allow for safe freedom of movement to accommodate physical education and active, safe play. Crocs are not allowed due to slip and support concerns during active play.

Nohl Canyon is beginning to see more students carrying their own cell phones. Please discuss with your child the guidelines for cell phones/communication devices (watches) while at school:

1) NO CELL from BELL to BELL - cell phones need to be turned OFF and stored in students backpack from first bell to dismissal bell.

2) Students who need to contact parents/guardians are expected to come to the front office to make the phone call.

3) Students who do not follow the guidelines:

1st occurrence: warning - expected to place phone back in backpack

2nd occurrence: cell phone confiscated - Parent Pick-up in office

The Jog-a-thon is NCSA’s primary fundraiser, which will fund many of the programs that we sponsor at the school including Art Masters, Music, PE, and Technology. We are committed to supporting the programs, and need everyone’s support in order to get there. Every donation goes directly back to the school.

See the attached flyer for the bi-annual poker night hosted by Villa Park Elementary Dad's Club to be hosted on October 19, 2024 at Villa Park City Hall.

This is a great event and we have had a wonderful turn out the past couple of events with Nohl Canyon Dads at this tournament. It is a wonderful way to meet other dads and also to enjoy a Dad's club event that isn't just building things or fixing things at school.

There is only space for 72 people so please RSVP early if you can. The buy in is only $35.00 and that pays for your seat, food and adult beverages. There are also prizes normally for the top 8 as well.
