Welcome Back For The 2024.25 School Year
Message from the Principal
Welcome back to the 2024 - 2025 school year. Every other Friday we will be sending home a parent newsletter highlighting all of the important events going on at Stella May Swartz. The 'Message from the Principal' will highlight all of the main features for this edition.
Highlights-
Arrival at SMS - Doors open at 7:30 AM and students are marked tardy if they arrive after 7:40 AM. Please try your best to ensure that your students are coming to school on time each day. When they are late to school they miss important announcements and routines that set them up for a successful day.
iReady Diagnostic Assessment - All students will be taking part in the iReady Reading and Math Diagnostic Assessment during the window of 9/3 - 9/13. Below you will find a letter from Dr. Chris Martelli that explains the purpose and structure of the assessment.
SMS Curriculum Night - will take place on Thursday September 5th from 6:30 -7:30 PM. Come meet your child's teachers, tour the school spaces and learn about our school goals for this year.
Student Handbook Acknowledgement Form - Please review the 2024 - 2025 Family and Student Handbook and sign off in your child's Skyward account.
Upcoming FTC Events - Pokemon Night on 9/11, Room Party Planning on 9/16, and McTeacher Night on 9/24.
Thank you all for all of your support and great start to the year. I look forward to seeing you all at Curriculum Night on Thursday 9/5.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Karen Marino
i Ready Assessment
This year we will NOT be administering the MAP assessment as we have in previous years. Our benchmark assessment for Reading and Math will be iReady. Students will take this assessment 3 times a year to measure their learning growth! Please see the linked letter from Dr. Martelli for more information.

Cell Phone Policy Update
We are implementing a change in our cell phone policy to prioritize student learning and well-being. Recent studies indicate that teens receive an overwhelming number of notifications daily, disrupting their academic focus and impacting their social-emotional health. The Surgeon General echoes these concerns. While our school board policy has always prohibited cell phones, smartwatches, and Bluetooth earbuds during school hours, we are now requiring that all phones and smartwatches be stored in student lockers throughout the day. We understand the importance of communication and we have installed phones in every classroom for emergencies.
We will allow our students to make calls to their family when necessary and you can always call our office to relay any messages to your child. Your partnership in supporting this change is crucial to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students.
2024 - 2025 Student Handbook and Acknowledgement Form
The 2024-2025 Family and Student Handbook is available in your child’s Skyward account. Each family is asked to sign the Acknowledgment form in Skyward. You can also find the Handbook on our website and in the attachment below.
NEW Policy in Student Handbook on Outside Food Ordering
Outside Food Policy
Outside Food Delivery Policy For the safety and security of all students, families are asked not to send food to school through outside food delivery services (e.g., Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc.). Deliveries of this nature can disrupt the school environment, pose potential safety risks, and cause logistical challenges. If a student requires a meal during the school day, they should bring it with them in the morning or utilize the school’s cafeteria services.
