Library News!
Hello Awesome Navigator Families,
¡Bienvenidos! This month, we’re celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15) by highlighting the rich culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. In the library, we’ve curated a special collection of books, activities, and resources to explore and enjoy!
Featured Books:
Dreamers, by Yuyi Morales
A beautifully illustrated picture book about the immigrant experience and the power of dreams and storytelling.
Alma and How She Got Her Name, by Juana Martinez-Neal
A heartwarming story about a young girl learning about her family history and the origins of her name.
Mi Papi Tiene Una Moto / My Papi Has a Motorcycle, by Isabel Quintero
When Daisy Ramona zooms around her neighborhood with her papi on his motorcycle, she sees the people and places she's always known. She also sees a community that is rapidly changing around her.
Fun in the library:
Some of our youngest readers will learn to craft Mexican Papel Picado, a traditional Mexican paper art to decorate our library in celebration of this month.
Did You Know?
Pura Belpré was the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City! Her legacy as a storyteller and advocate for bilingual literature continues to inspire librarians everywhere. The Pura Belpré Award is a recognition presented to a Latino or Latina author and illustrator whose work best portrays the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for children or youth.

District Guidelines - Toy Weapons
From our Student Services Director, Brian Dawson:
We are seeing students bring their toy weapons to school. Specifically, toy guns and lasers. They have not used them as a threat toward anyone. However, these items can cause fear with the current time we are living in.
A replica of a weapon, such as a toy gun, is not a weapon. However, a student can receive both campus consequences for bringing the item(s) to campus, on a bus, or a school-sponsored event. If the item is thought to be or represented as a real weapon, a student could go to our District Alternative Education Program.
In our student code of conduct, it states:
Possession of Prohibited Items
Students shall not possess or use:
- Fireworks of any kind, smoke or stink bombs, or any other pyrotechnic device;
- A razor, box cutter, chain, or any other object used in a way that threatens or inflicts bodily injury to another person;
- A “look-alike” weapon that is intended to be used as a weapon or could reasonably be perceived as a weapon;
- An air gun or BB gun;
- Ammunition;
- A hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;
- A firearm silencer or suppressor;
- A location-restricted knife;
- A club;
- A firearm;
- A firearm silencer or suppressor;
- A stun gun;
- Knuckles;
- A pocket knife or any other small knife;
- Mace or pepper spray;
- Pornographic material;
- Tobacco products, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and any component, part, or accessory for an e-cigarette device (HB 114 requires mandatory placement in a DAEP for any offenses related to e-cigarettes);
- Matches or a lighter;
- A laser pointer, unless it is for an approved use; or
- Any articles not generally considered to be weapons, including school supplies, when the principal or designee determines that a danger exists.
