Freshman Studies STEM at the Naval Academy
Lisseth Hershey, a freshman, attended the U.S. Naval Academy’s 2024 summer science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program. There were more than 5,000 applicants from around the world, with 330 students attending each session. The goal of summer STEM is to leverage creativity and teamwork to solve the problems of today, while allowing students the chance to learn about higher education at the Naval Academy, interact with Midshipmen, and develop leadership skills.
In addition to the more traditional fields of study, such as math and chemistry, Hershey attended modules where she learned about the growing number of cyberattacks as one of our nation’s top security concerns, studied bioterrorism, and programed autonomous robots.
But the program was not all about work. Bruce Latta, the Naval Academy’s Dean of Admissions, encouraged the students to not only learn, but have fun along the way. “I would say the best part, by far, was getting to know my squad mates,” said Hershey. “By the end of the week, we were like one big family.”
