December is Universal Human Rights Month
In December, we honor Universal Human Rights Month. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948.
What can you do to celebrate human rights? Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- Read a child-friendly version of the Declaration of Human Rights.
- Check out a book about human rights.
- Treat everyone with respect and kindness.
- Spread the word on social media.
Awesome Apps!
Recently, I had the opportunity to virtually attend the 2nd Annual Digital Learning App Smash hosted by Future Ready Librarians. It was a great way to learn about some awesome programs that librarians across the country are using to enhance their services.
If you have time (1 hour), you can view the whole App Smash HERE.
If you don't have an hour, you can view the slideshow HERE. On each slide, the presenter shares an app description, its uses for a Future Ready Librarian, and ideas for how to use it with your students.
If you don't have time for either, I've shared my favorites for school librarians here:
- Teaching Books: Find book trailers, meet-the-author recordings, audiobook performances, complete book readings, and many other support materials for teaching books.
- Canva for Education: Create presentations, classroom decorations, social media graphics, bookmarks, quarterly statistics, and more!
- Genially: Very similar to Canva! Create presentations, infographics, quizzes, games, escape rooms, interactive images, videos, calendars, planners, rubrics, and more!
- Book Creator: Create library handbooks, research manuals, and tutorials for your students that include multiple pathways to learning through audio, video, text, and images.
- Kahoot!: Create library quiz games to add interest and pizzazz to your lessons.

Save the Date for ExCITE!
ExCITE! (formerly School Library Boot Camp) is an annual professional development opportunity for South Dakota librarians and educators. The SD State Library partners with Black Hills State University to offer ExCITE! for undergraduate or graduate credit. This two credit course can be applied to the Library Methods requirement of the BHSU School Library Media minor and the SD DOE Library Media endorsement. It can also be used for teacher renewal.
LSTA federal funding through the Institute of Museum and Library Services provides speakers, resources, and full-tuition scholarships for attendees.
Each year brings a new theme, new personal connections, and new learning. Join us during the month of July where we will explore Information Literacy in a fully on-line course. Registration will open in Spring 2022.
