GMS Weekly News and Notes
Weekly Updates
This week's cover photo is a showcase of our staff's outstanding Halloween costume effort. A number of staff members were "nominated" to come to school in costume on Thursday, as part of our fundraiser for the Kay Yow cancer fund. Thanks to our staff, and thanks to our students and their families for supporting this annual fundraiser!
Congratulations to all of the GMS musicians who helped make Cantonstock the best one ever on Saturday!
As the calendar turns to November, we are coming to the end of the first marking term. Per GMS tradition, we will host our annual Parent-Teacher conferences after first term report cards are released. On Wednesday, November 20th GMS students will be dismissed at 11:05AM. The balance of the day will be dedicated to conferences with a mix of in-person and virtual meeting opportunities for our families. More detailed information will be sent soon, but please note that the portal for signing up for conferences will open on Tuesday, November 12th.
Campus Highlight: The beating heart of literature
This week in Dr. Morgan and Mr. Place's English class, students participated in their first Socratic Seminar of the year! They used accountable talk stems and textual evidence to debate the finer points of Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart, digging deeply into questions like, "how does fear drive the action?" and "what is the impact of the first-person point of view in the story?" Excellent job, E Block!
Campus Highlight: STEAM Week
This week, GMS celebrated STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) week. Students in Ms. Johansen's classes worked on projects that integrated tech, engineering, and sustainability. They did a great job putting the "A" in STEAM!
Happy Diwali!
We were thrilled that some of our students who celebrate the annual "Festival of Lights" helped to bring the joy of Diwali to the building on Thursday and Friday. Special thanks to Ms. Johansen, Ms. Robinson, Ms. Delaney, and Ms. Gabriel for their support of the GMS festivities. We hope that our Hindu community enjoyed a wonderful celebration!
Club Highlight: Pumpkin Painting!
Members of the GMS gardening club painted their Halloween pumpkins earlier this week. The results were scary good!
