Carleton Washburne
August Update and Reminders - August 20, 2024
Washburne Families,
We hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer with your families! The start of the 2024-25 school year is two weeks away, and we wanted to reach out to you with some information pertinent to Washburne families.
We are so excited to reconnect with our families and our wonderful Washburne students in anticipation of an excellent school year. After a summer of construction, we look forward to welcoming everyone back to our campus, supporting our students’ transition into a new school year, and engaging the students in learning.
In anticipation of September 3rd, we wanted to share information about the first days of school and upcoming events for students and families.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Carleton Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal
Accessing the Parent Portal for Student Schedule Information
Student schedule information will go live to all families on Friday, August 23rd at 10:00am via the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Please know that parent and teacher feedback was thoroughly reviewed, and a lot of time and thought went into every student placement. Due to the complexities involved in this process, we are unable to change team and advisory placements.
At Washburne, you will see your child’s schedule for trimester 1. Please keep in mind that students will have different electives during trimester 2 and 3.
You can access the PowerSchool Parent Portal using this link.
If you are a new district family, you will receive a specific email from our district office with directions to access the parent portal.
If you have any trouble accessing your account, please reach out to parentportal@winnetka36.org.
School Building Tours
We are happy to be able to open up our building once again to students and families to take a tour of Carleton Washburne School prior to the start of the school year. Our building will be open for self-guided tours on Tuesday, August 27th from 9:00am -12:00pm.
If you would prefer to take a guided tour of the building, we will be offering a principal led tour at 10am on 8/27.
Please come to the main entrance off Hibbard Road to begin your tour.
Student Meet and Greet Event and Locations
On Thursday, August 29th from 11:30am-12:15pm all Washburne students will have the opportunity to meet with their team teachers and connect with other students. This event will take place outside around Carleton Washburne School.
This is a great opportunity for 8th graders to connect with their teachers and classmates and for 7th graders to meet their teachers and fellow teammates. Students can stop by at any point during this timeframe to meet the teachers on their team. Each team will be located outside the perimeter of our building, near the door where students will enter the building each day.
Please see the image below to see the location for your child’s team:
Washburne Lunch Information

Update for the 2024-25 school year:
Parents will receive an email when the child's account goes below $10.00. A student is allowed to overdraw their account up to $25.00. Once it goes below -$25.00, My MealTime will not allow the cashiers to ring out any more items on credit. At this point, families must deposit additional funds or the child must have cash to purchase food.
In addition, families who do not already have accounts created will receive an email from the district this week with login information. If you have any questions, please contact Margie Karabas at 847-501-2527 or margiekarabas@winnetka36.org.
KW Uniforms and School Supplies
All students should have the supplies listed in this LINK, either ordered as a kit through our PTO or purchased on your own. Please know that it is okay if students do not bring every item to school on the very first day. Our teachers will communicate with students regarding expectations for managing school supplies on the first day.
The PTO and the KW teams at Skokie and Washburne are excited to continue our partnership with New Trier High School’s One Stop Trev Shop! The One Stop Trev Shop is an innovative job training/life skills program for New Trier’s Transition Program students. Please CLICK HERE for more information on how to order your KW uniform.

One Author, One Campus
This summer marked the fourth edition of “One Author, One Campus” between Skokie and Washburne schools. The goal of this project is to foster our community of readers between the two campuses, while also modeling the joy of reading with students and families. This year we made a slight tweak to the project by featuring the books of one author, Dusti Bowling. Washburne students were able to choose from one of four award-winning titles by Ms. Bowling, and we are looking forward to a visit from Ms. Bowling this fall. We hope you were able to engage in this program as a family and found many examples of the 4Rs (Resilience, Relationships, Responsibility, and Reflection) which are a foundation of the Washburne Advisory Program.
Thank you for helping support our community of readers!
