LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Santa Rita Families,
Happy January! For the month of January, we are studying, thinking and talking about Perseverance. One way to think about Perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” We all experience challenges in our lives. We all have moments when we feel like we can’t do it or that we want to give up on a big task. It is important to develop tools that help us work through those challenges in order to grow in those moments instead of giving up. How might you practice Perseverance as a family this month? To view the rest of the family newsletter for Perseverance, please click here: Family Newsletter.
MLK Jr Day & Teacher In-Service 1/20 & 1/22
On Monday, 1/20 and Tuesday, 1/21, there will be no school for students. Monday is the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday when we take the time to celebrate his life, legacy and the contributions he made to the Civil Rights movement and to supporting equal rights and opportunities for all human beings.
On Tuesday, our staff will be taking a day to collaborate with fellow teachers across the district to grow their practice in supporting students at school. Both days are meaningful and we are happy for the opportunity for both. School will resume next Wednesday 1/22.
41st Margaret Thompson Historical Essay Contest
It's the time of year for the annual Margaret Thompson Essay Contest sponsored jointly by the Los Altos History Museum and the LA Historical Commission. This is the 41st year of this community essay contest for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. The essay documents are attached to this email and will give you all the details. Here are the highlights of the contest this year:
· The essay topic revolves around the current changing exhibit at Los Altos History Museum titled "Rooted In Time - Journey through Hidden Villa." For more information about the exhibit, click here. The exhibit is open now and closes on March 9th. The Museum is open Thursdays-Sundays, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.mt
· Georgi Shea has created a short video about the Essay Contest and this year's topic to help you introduce the contest to your students. The link to this video is posted here.
· Please send all completed essays by Tuesday, March 11th to the Curriculum Office for pickup.
· Please go over the Scoring Rubric with your class so the students will understand how the essays will be scored. There will be at least three winners per grade level.
· Students must submit a signed (by parent or guardian) Cover Sheet with their essay.
· Further directions are on the Cover Sheet and the Essay Contest Instruction document.
