VOGELTOWN SCHOOL PANUI
TE KURA O HUATOKI. TERM 2, WEEK 7, 2024.
KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHĀNAU!
Kia ora koutou parents and whānau.
I have been fortunate to spend a couple of days this week meeting with all support staff at Vogeltown School. It's been a wonderful opportunity to get to know them all much better and it has highlighted just how valuable they all are to the daily operation of the school.
At Vogeltown School we employ about 16 support staff in a variety of roles. The contribution for our teacher aides alone, through the generosity of the Board of Trustees, is in excess of $200,000. This is money we allocate outside of any Ministry of Education contributions and needs to be factored into our budget for each year. This is a significant commitment from the Board of Trustees and one for which we are very grateful.
When we think of schools and the people who work there we tend to think of teachers and the principal, however it’s the support staff that are often in the thick of things and working closely with students with a variety of needs. Their work could involve closely supporting individual children or groups of children with their learning, delivering individualised or targeted programmes, or monitoring children during breaks. This provides teachers with the time and space to deliver programmes of learning that better meets the needs of all children.
In addition to this is the valuable role our office administrators do. Besides being the point of first contact for parents and whānau, they play a huge role in the maintaining the daily operations of the school through responsibilities like enrolments, finances, payroll, sports administration, and enabling contact and communication between school and our different stakeholders.
Our support staff are such a great asset to our school and I’d like to thank them for all that they do. They all talked about the satisfaction they get from helping others, seeing children succeed and progress, or simply being present for those 'aha moments'! We’re so lucky to have them with us!

CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING
Room 14 used their cooperative learning role cards to ensure everyone had a job to do and a responsibility to help the group achieve the goal. Our goal was to write some persuasive statements telling Ms Pitcairn why they should have a big piece of cake for dinner instead of vegetables!
SUSTAINABILITY POSTERS ROOM 11
The children in Room 11 were tasked with creating sustainability posters focusing on the areas of recycling, green energy, eco-friendly inventions and preventing plastic pollution.
TARANAKI TEAM (JUNIORS) - CYCLE SKILLS
Kia ora e te whānau
Next week the Taranaki syndicate are participating in the Let’s Get Going cycle skills programme. This is run by Playball Taranaki on behalf of Sport Taranaki. We still have a lot of permission slips outstanding so please check your child's school bag for the paper form or we have set up an electronic form on Skool Loop which may be easier for some of you. Permission must be received by Monday morning at the latest please.
The sessions start this Monday 17 June and we are hoping that each class will be able to do one session each day of the week, but this will be weather dependent. If you have a bike (trainer wheels are fine) or a balance bike it would be great if you could bring it to school to use. To help out with this we are happy for you to drop bikes off on Monday and pick them up Friday and we will store the bikes in the classrooms overnight. If your child does not have a suitable bike to bring, there will be spare ones available for your child to use. Also please remember your child must wear closed toe shoes to ride in as well as a helmet.
Thank you for your support with this and we know the children will have a great time learning some new skills on their bikes.
From the Taranaki Team
WET DAYS - SPARE CLOTHES
Just a reminder for these wet days - can all children please have a spare change of clothes in their school bags each day. We are having lots of instances of children slipping or getting caught in the weather so having spare clothes for them would be very helpful. Thanks whānau!
DADS AND DAUGHTERS
Friday 21st June at 7:30 am in the school hall!
Our ‘Dads and Daughters’ breakfast is coming and we need you there! Don't miss out on this fantastic community event!
We encourage all ‘daughters’ at school to come along with their Dad or a significant other adult male (such as their grandad, uncle, cousin, brother) to enjoy some quality time together. We will also have a group of ‘surrogate Dads’ available - local police officers, Taranaki rugby players and some of our own teachers - on this day for those daughters who are unable to have someone with them on this morning.
It's something you don't want to miss so mark it on the calendar now! Please return the notice sent home as soon as possible to help us with our organisation.
JUMPING JUNE
Kia ora whānau
This Monday 17 June we are getting in behind Jumping June, a fundraiser for the New Zealand Heart Foundation. It would be great if all students could bring along a gold coin donation to support this event.
Each class has been allocated a half hour time slot throughout the day to get out and do some skipping (with ropes kindly donated by the Heart Foundation) to encourage students to keep their hearts healthy and to join the fight against heart disease.
As always we look forward to your support.
Thanks whānau!
READING TIME!
PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
It is important that we know if you have a child starting school sometime in the remainder of this year. This will allow us to put organisation in place for new students - especially those starting school, and to understand our predicted roll throughout the year.
You can do this by contacting the office to confirm that we have your child on our records, or by completing an enrolment form (which can be collected from the school or downloaded off our website).
If you know of anyone else living in zone that may be looking to enrol then please share this message with them.
