A Note from the Principal
On Tuesday, students will begin the Winter NWEA assessment. 4th and 5th graders will complete the ELA and Math tests over the next four days in class. Make-up NWEA testing will begin on Monday, January 27th in the cafeteria. The NWEA is an assessment that students take three times throughout the year (Fall, Winter, and Spring), and is used to track academic progress and inform instructional practices in the classroom. You can assist your child in preparation for testing by doing the following:
Students are required to have headphones for the ELA test. Please send your student to school with headphones for that test. There will be a small number of spare headphones for use in case a student forgets. Bluetooth headphones are not permitted.
Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep before the test and make sure your child eats properly the day of the test.
Ensure that your child is present during testing. Children generally perform better when taking tests in their groups rather than at a make-up time.
Get your child to school on time the day of the test.
Please note that we do not have school on Monday, January 20th to honor the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. We hope our students and staff will take time today to honor equality, justice, and service to the community.
*Friendly Reminder: Many students are coming to school without coats. Please be sure your student has appropriate outerwear for the weather. We go outdoors as long as the temperature is above 10 degrees, including windchill. If you need assistance with getting warm weather gear, please reach out and we can help!

Standard Response Protocol Review
As we kick off 2025, I'd like to remind you of the district's protocols for safety and security. Beginning August, 2024, the district began practicing safety drills using the language and practices from the "I Love You Guys" Foundation. If you would like to learn more about our District’s Standard Response Protocols, I invite you to view the parent information on our website. We will continue to revisit these protocols within safety drills for the remainder of the year.
January Social-Emotional Learning Update:
Dear Families,
We are excited to share that over the next few weeks, our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program will focus on the theme of friendship with our 4th and 5th graders. Understanding and maintaining healthy friendships is an important part of children’s social development and overall well-being.
Focus Areas:
1. Understanding Friendship:
- Students will learn about the qualities that make a good friend, such as kindness, trustworthiness, empathy, and respect. We will discuss how friendships can have a positive impact on their lives and how important it is to be a good friend to others.
2. Building and Maintaining Friendships:
- We will explore how to start and maintain friendships through effective communication, active listening, and shared activities. Students will learn strategies for connecting with others and building meaningful, supportive relationships.
3. Navigating Friendship Challenges:
- As part of learning about friendship, students will discuss common challenges they may face, such as misunderstandings, disagreements, and peer pressure. They will learn strategies for handling these situations constructively and how to seek help when needed.
4. Empathy and Inclusivity:
- Emphasizing the importance of empathy, we will encourage students to consider others' feelings and perspectives. We will also focus on the value of inclusivity, teaching students how to welcome and include others, especially those who may feel left out or different.
How You Can Support at Home:
Encourage Open Conversations: Talk with your child about their friendships. Ask them about the qualities they appreciate in their friends and what they think makes a good friend. These conversations can help reinforce what they are learning in school.
Model Healthy Friendships: Share your experiences with friendship, both the positives and the challenges. Let your child see how you handle conflicts and maintain healthy relationships with your own friends.
Promote Empathy and Inclusion: Encourage your child to think about how others might feel and to include others in activities. You can do this by discussing characters in books or movies and asking how your child thinks they might be feeling.
Practice Conflict Resolution: If your child has a disagreement with a friend, guide them through resolving it calmly and respectfully. Encourage them to express their feelings and listen to the other person’s perspective.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping our students develop strong social skills and build lasting, healthy friendships. Together, we can help our children create positive, supportive relationships that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Warm regards,
Justice Manchester, LLMSW

Recess Weather/Indoor Recess Status
From Dr. Laatsch's Community Message:
Weather is dynamic and temperatures vary throughout the day. Principals, in coordination with grade-level teams, are empowered to determine whether or not to stay indoors for recess taking into account current weather conditions and the developmental needs of their students. Generally speaking, principals will keep students indoors for recess when the temperature including the wind chill falls below 10 degrees F.
Please prepare students with hats, gloves (snow pants and boots are needed to go off the concrete, where there is snow cover).
CTE Feedback Needed!
Feedback Needed!! SAS families and community members are encouraged to participate in a survey to guide future educational strategies and investments related to career and technical education. The survey, conducted by Hanover Research on behalf of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD), should take less than 10 minutes to complete and closes on January 17. WISD will receive survey results only in aggregate form and no personally identifiable information will be collected or reported.

Hornets Helping Hornets
Every once in a while, a Saline Area Schools family needs just a little bit of extra help. When that happens, we want to make it easy for other families to fulfill that need without knowing who the need is for. These needs will include such things as coats, boots, snacks, gas cards, lunch money, etc...
To learn more and view the needs, simply sign up to be on the weekly email distribution list here. This is a very easy way to help out fellow SAS community members!
Thank you for caring about our Saline Area Schools families! Questions? You can reach us at salinehornetshelpinghornets@gmail.com.
