CAASSP/Smart Balanced State Testing
Each year, California students in grades 3-8 take the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Our 3rd-8th grade students have been taking practice tests and participating in test preparation activities over the past few weeks to prepare for the assessment. Castle Rock's assessment window for the CAASPP is May 6th-May 24th. We will be taking different portions of the assessment at different times during the assessment window. It is very important that students attend regularly, are on time to school, and getting plenty of sleep during the assessment window.
The CAASPP is made up of several different assessments; which are the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment for both Reading and Math (SBAC), California Science Test (CAST), California Alternative Assessment (CAA), and the California Spanish Assessment.
Our 3rd-8th grade students will take the following test(s), depending on their grade level:
- 3rd- 8th Grade: Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments (SBAC) for English language arts/literacy and mathematics (A total of 4 assessments- 2 ELA and 2 Math)
- 5th and 8th Grade: California Science Test (CAST)

8th Grade Fundraisers
Can Recycling Drive- 8th Grade Fundraiser
Our 8th grade students are raising money for their 8th Grade Trip at the end of the school year. They will be collecting cans to take to be recycled for the remainder of the school year. If you have aluminum cans that you would like to donate, please send them with your student and turn them in to the school office. It would be great if they were completely empty and in a bag when they are dropped off. We will take them every week or so to the recycling center, so when ever you get a collection of them feel free to send them in. All funds from the recycled cans will go to help pay for our 8th Grade Trip.

May and June Attendance Tip: End the School Year Strong- Attend Daily!
The months of May and June are a time for reflection and celebration about what was learned. Just like completing a marathon when the finish line is in sight, ending the school year strong creates a sense of accomplishment; it sets students up for success in the next grade.
Superintendent's Message
Message from Leslie Rames
As we approach the end of the school year, I am filled with gratitude and pride for all that we have accomplished together. The year has been filled with unforgettable moments, growth, and achievements. I would like to give my heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated teachers and staff for their commitment to our student’s success. They have worked hard each day and their efforts have created a nurturing and inspiring learning environment where each of our students is able to learn and thrive. During the next weeks make sure to share your appreciation to all of our school’s amazing staff.
To our outstanding students, congratulations on a year filled with curiosity, hard work, and your continued passion for learning. Our students have participated in valuable lessons both inside and outside of the classroom, embraced new challenges, and demonstrated exceptional growth.
I am so thankful for our supportive parents and families. Thank you for entrusting us with educating your children. Your involvement in our school makes a significant difference for our students and contributes to the spirit of our school. Your attendance at assemblies, school events, and family nights shows your child that you support their educational journey.
Keep in mind that we have a lot of learning and educational experiences occurring during the remainder of the school year, so it is important that students continue to attend school regularly and keep working hard each day.
A few very important assessments will be happening during the months of May and June. Here is a bit of information:
Our 3rd-8th grade students will take the California Smarter Balanced/CAASPP Assessment during the 2nd-4th weeks of May. The CAASPP is a very important assessment for our students and our school. Please try to make sure that if you are scheduling appointments for your student(s) during this time that they are after school so that your student doesn’t miss an assessment. Student are more successful when they take the assessment with their class rather than when they make it up separately.
All of our students will take the End of the Year I-Ready Benchmark Assessment the last few weeks of school. The i-Ready Assessment will provide us with data to show how much each student has improved this school year when we compare the end of the year results with those from August. This data is great information for the school and for parents so that we know how to help our students over the summer and next school year. It also provides the school with much needed information when determining appropriate programs for the school.
I am so excited to see what next year will bring for each and everyone of our students as they continue to learn and grow here at Castle Rock.
Wishing you a summer break filled with joy, relaxation, and memorable moment with your families.
