Call for Recipes!
Gina is excited to invite the congregation to our Nov 27th "Share a beloved recipe, share your heart" service. A service where we will be Recipe Sharing and cooking up some joy, good music and thankfulness at the UU!
Gina is inviting all congregation members to please share a beloved or favorite "recipe" for the upcoming Nov 27 service!
You can email your recipe to: music@uucsjs.org
Please keep it to a maximum of one recipe per person, feel free to include a short explanation of what makes it beloved (if you like). Even if it's only because it's your favorite dish to eat! It can be sweet or savory or both!
Please send your recipes in NOW! ...and/or no later than Nov 19th! and Thank you!
Gina's family of origin is of Spanish/Cuban and Irish heritage. Growing up in a family of seven there were many traditional Cuban dishes gracing the table. Her abuelita aka Nana made the absolute BEST food. It was always a celebration when Nana came to town with her arroz con pollo, picadillo and morro. Every St Patty's day there was homemade Irish soda bread, ham and cabbage and we made the sweet "Irish potatoes" (from our Philadelphia side!).

UUCSJS Annual Auction
Auction Fever!
Now that you’ve made your donations to the 17th annual UUCSJS Auction on November 12th – you’ve made them, haven’t you? – let’s discuss the types of auctions you’ll likely encounter on Auction night.
Silent Auction
The Silent Auction is anything but! It’s the largest of the auctions in that it includes events, items, services, handmade items and baked goods. It gets awfully noisy in what we call the “sanctuary.”
Let’s discuss bidding on the Silent Auction. Each item or event or service has a sheet on which you write your name and bid. Bid high, or check back, because someone may outbid you! If the bids are a fixed price, as with events, you win it when you write your name on one of the pre-numbered lines.
The “Win it now” price means that if you really, really, really want the item, you can write your name on the bottom line next to the “win it now” price and give the sheet to the table monitor. You pay that price – which is usually closer to the estimated value of the item – but that perfect item will be yours before the evening is out!
Live Auction
The Live Auction is when you get to hold up a paddle with your number to bid on something as the auctioneer calls out the offered bids. This is the big time, the main event, the show, the major leagues, the cat’s pajamas. This is when – unlike when you were in grade school and had to use the bathroom – holding up your hand could get you in serious trouble. But this is also the most fun part of the auction! Don’t dare wave to someone in the front row, or you could be the proud, new owner of a gold-plated birdcage.
Chance Auction
The Chance Auction is when you buy tickets, and then place a ticket in the cup in front of the item you want to win. Later, we call out the numbers, and if we pick your number, it’s all yours! Definitely fun for everyone!
Call to Action
UUFaithActionNJ: Reproductive Justice Task Force
We will have postcards available this Sunday at the UU to be signed and sent urging support for the:
Reproductive Equity Act (S2918)
This bill will protect and expand abortion access for all people here in NJ, regardless of income, insurance, or immigration status. The bill also strengthens protections for health care providers.
Please check it out this Sunday. More information will be provided at the sign up table.
Thank you!

Blue Jean Sunday

Having to be the “knower” or always being right is heavy armor. It’s defensiveness, it’s posturing, and, worst of all, it’s a huge driver of bulls**t. It’s also very common—most of us have some degree of knower in us.
Check out this Brene Brown article "The Courage to Not Know" for three strategies to transform always knowing into always learning.

SEARCH by Michelle Huneven
Dana Potowski is a restaurant critic and food writer and a long time member of a progressive UU Congregation in Southern California. Under pressure to find her next book idea, she agrees to join The church search committee for a new minister, and resolves to secretly pen a memoir, with recipes, about the experience. That memoir, SEARCH, follows the travails of the committee and their candidates – And becomes its own media sensation.
Anyone is welcome to attend this meeting as this is an interesting and fun book regarding the UU minister search!

The Power of Awe
Guest minister Rev Kim D. Wilson
Awe imbues us with a different sense of ourselves — one that is smaller, more humble and part of a greater wholeness. It can also be a powerful source of healing. We explore the connections between experiences of awe and altruism, a feeling of attunement with humanity and other positive effects on our mental and spiritual well-being.
PLEASE NOTE: This service will be in person at UUCSJS and streamed live on our Facebook page. A recording will be available later in the day on our YouTube Channel.
*Masks are currently optional at UUCSJS.
