Women's History Month
A Little History about Women History Month
March 1st will mark the beginning of Women's History Month. Since 1910, March 8th has been observed as International Women's Day by people around the World.
In 1978, an education task force in Sonoma County, California, kicked off Women's History Week on this day. The goal was to draw attention to the fact that women's history wasn't really included in the K - 12 school curriculum. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8th as Women's History Week. By 1986, 14 states had declared the entire month of March Women's History Month. The following year, Congress declared March as Women's History Month.
The National Women’s History theme for 2024 is Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Ramadan 2024
RAMADAN 2024
Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. It is celebrated as the month during which Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran, the holy book for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. This year, Ramadan lasts from the evening of Sunday, March 10th to the evening of Tuesday, April 9th, 2024. Schools will be closed on Wednesday, April 10th in observance of Eid al Fitr.
For Muslims, Ramadan is a period of introspection, communal prayer (ṣalāt) in the mosque, and reading of the Qurʾān. God forgives the past sins of those who observe the holy month with fasting, prayer, and faithful intention.
A Few Fascinating Facts
Muslims all over the world regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or race participate in fasting for the entire month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the most important month on the Islamic calendar. Most of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims observe the holy month of Ramadan each year.
The new moon determines the start of Ramadan. The starting date depends on a lunar calendar that doesn't match up with the solar calendar.
People fasting only eat before the sun rises and after the sunsets: The meal taken before sunrise is Suhoor and the meal taken after sunset is Iftar. Children are not obligated to fast until they reach puberty but some choose to observe it in preparation for their adulthood.
Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars — or duties — of Islam, along with the testimony of faith, prayer, charitable giving, and making a pilgrimage to Mecca.
Ramadan is a month for generosity and giving. It is known as a month of simplicity and a time to remember those who are less fortunate than us.
Odyssey of the Mind
Gwynedd Square Odyssey of the Mind Competed on Saturday, March 2nd
Our Odyssey of the Mind teams competed in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 2, at Temple University in Ambler!
Each team was challenged with a Spontaneous Problem as well as presenting a Long Term problem they have been working on for the past several months. This year, Gwynedd Square has 35 students competing across 7 teams.
We had representation on two Primary Division teams who were solutioning The Night Life. Mia Sternberg, Arpith Ezekiel Arjunan, and Aaliyah Henderson joined forces with students from Gwyn Nor, Hatfield, Inglewood, and North Wales. Our second team had Elena Antoine, Cade Cox, Gabrielle Holstein, Mackenzie Anderson, and Sydney Breuer. In this problem, teams created and presented a performance about an explorer who searches for things in nature that "wake up" at nighttime.
We also had representation on two Division 1 teams tackling the Drive-In Movie. Daiwik Sundar teamed up with students from Inglewood and AM Kulp, our second team contains Geneva Cox, Jackson Evans, Avery Liu, Izzy Ryan, and Joshitha Varaprasad. In this problem, the teams created a ride that traveled to a drive-in theater and included special effects to make them part of the action.
Two teams are tackling Classics…Opening Night Antics: Division 1 team members, Ben Cucinella, Colette Dover, Lillian Holstein, Emma Hunter, Cara Landers, Noah Migdal, and Penelope Weitzman; and Division 2 team members Mohamed Alanany, Savannah Barbato, Celeste England, Elise England, Annabella Hunter, Mila Mihaly, and Danica Mitchell. In this problem, the team portrayed the opening night of a classic play that did not go as planned, but is still a wild success.
Division 1 team, composed of Mark Christian, Anya Fu, Penelope Gieske, Alyssa Lieu, Veda Sternberg, Philip Subbio, and Melodie Tagmyer accepted the challenge of Rocking World Detour. In this problem, teams created a performance about a rock band on tour that derails and must use their music to get back on track.
The teams have worked very hard on their solutions to their problems!
