First Day of School is Here
Welcome Back
The first day of school is just around the corner, and we are thrilled to welcome your children back to Crescent for what promises to be an exciting and successful school year!
Important Reminders:
Crescent Campus Visit: Visit our campus the day before school starts on Tuesday, August 20 at 5:30 to locate your child's classroom. Teacher assignments are made available in Aeries parent portal.
School Start Time: School begins promptly at 8:15. Please ensure that your child arrives a few minutes early to get settled in and ready for the day. Parents are welcomed to walk their child to their classroom on the first day of school.
PTA Mixer at 8:30am: Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity to meet fellow Cougar Families at our lunch tables.
School Supplies: Double-check that your child has all the necessary school supplies packed and ready to go. Being prepared on the first day helps set a positive tone for the rest of the year.
Lunch and Snacks: If your child brings lunch, pack something healthy and easy to eat. Review the school’s lunch menu if they will be eating lunch (brunch on Wednesdays) at school. August Lunch menu link.
Positive Mindset: Encourage your child to approach the first day with excitement and an open mind. It’s normal to feel a mix of nerves and excitement, and a few reassuring words from you can make all the difference.
Dismissal: On Wednesdays TK through 3rd grade are dismissed at 12:30pm. 4th-6th Grade are dismissed at 12:45 pm on Wednesday. Please take a few minutes to read our Cougar Handbook for detailed information regarding our dismissal procedure. The handbook is linked at the bottom of the newsletter each week. Our expectation is that all parents follow our dismissal guidelines to ensure the safety of our students.
We’re Here to Help:
If you have any last-minute questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Our office staff and teachers are here to support you and your child every step of the way.
We look forward to seeing all the bright and eager faces Wednesday morning, ready to start a new adventure in learning. Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. Together, we will make this school year one to remember!

Get to Know Our Programs!
Gifted and Talented Magnet Program
Crescent Elementary is one of the few schools in OUSD with designated classes for students who are identified as Gifted and Talented through OUSD qualification criteria. The curriculum is differentiated to provide a variety of instructional strategies structured so that individual student experiences and activities can vary in acceleration, depth, complexity, or degree of novelty.
When will my child be screened for GATE?
- Universal Screening: All 3rd grade students tested in their classrooms unless parents "opt out" of testing. Students who have been previously qualified may retake the test at parent request.
- OUSD 2nd, 4th -6th Grade: We do small group testing, by referral. Parents, teachers, and or school administrators may refer students.
What are the qualification criteria for GATE?
- OUSD utilizes multiple measures to determine GATE qualification:
What models of GATE instruction does Orange Unified offer?
Orange Unified provides both GATE magnet programs at designated schools, and cluster programs at all schools. In the magnet program students attend a central school site (Crescent Elementary) and receive instruction geared to a classroom of all GATE and high achieving students. In the cluster program, students remain in their home/current school, and are grouped with other GATE and/or high achieving students to receive differentiated instruction in a diverse classroom setting. Both models are research based and provide advantages for students and families.
Gifted and Talented Associations outside of OUSD for Parents and Educators:
Stay connected with a Gifted and Talented association:
California Association for the Gifted (CAG): A mission driven, volunteer administered, non-profit organization whose membership of parents and educators work to promote the welfare and appropriate education of gifted students. www.CAGifted.org
