A Note From Dr. Neubeck
Last week, I had to deliver the news to the community and our staff that we will need to make significant cuts as we find expenses are outpacing our revenue. As I stated in meetings, this is because of many reasons including the end of over $400,000 in Federal funding from COVID, a projected decrease in student enrollment, increases in health insurance for this year and next year, purchased service increases due to inflation, and expenditures outpacing budget assumptions.
Many people ask if we should have seen this coming sooner. In true transparency, we could have seen some of it sooner but, with the transition of between business directors in the middle of the year and not knowing about the significant insurance premiums until April, it made it difficult to be able to understand where we were tracking in regards to expenses and revenue. Many times, school districts will have a longer period of preparation for such decreases and will have time to make strategic plans for their district. With the end of the school coming quickly and having so many people and moving parts in our school district, it can be difficult and more harmful to make "knee-jerk" reactions that can have lasting negative impacts.
When we talk with students in our classroom, we talk about treating people the right way and to keep others in mind when you make decisions. The school board and our leadership team have been keeping that in mind as we go through these reduction decisions. It is never easy to make cuts, especially at this late stage in the school year.
As I stated in my meetings, our school board, leadership team and staff are committed to doing what is right and best for our students, families and communities as we work through these financial challenges. We are committed to be transparent and we will be an even stronger and better district on the other end. Please check out our website for more information and thank you for your continued support, especially during this time.
Go Bears!

Community Service Day
On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, Byron High School held its annual Community Service Day where students, grades 9-12, and staff gave back to our Byron Community and beyond! There were students at all Byron Public School buildings, County parks, Churches, and homes of Byron residents through Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and clean-up routes across our community. Students participated in "spring cleaning", general maintenance, and other requests as needed. Community Service Day is always a great way for our students to show pride in our community and a special way for all of us at Byron High School to say "Thank You" to our supportive community!

Your Voice Matters - Take the Statewide Assessment Redesign Survey
Please see the letter below from Bobbie Burnham, Assistant Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education. Thank you for your time and consideration of the Statewide Assessment Redesign Survey.
Dear Education Partners,
The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is excited to launch the Statewide Testing Redesign Survey. Your voice and the perspectives of your community are important to this effort as new academic standards are adopted in science, reading, and math, along with new assessments. The survey asks about how you receive, interpret, and use statewide assessment results. Your feedback will help MDE ensure the results from the new assessments students take beginning in Spring 2025 are as clear and useful as possible.
The survey is now open for submissions until May 19. It should take no longer than 15 minutes and responses will be completely anonymous.

Additionally, MDE is hoping individuals in these groups will share their perspective:
• Students in grades 8–12
• Families of students in grades K–12
• Classroom educators
• School-level leadership staff
• District-level leadership staff
• Assessment coordinators
• Community group members and leaders
• State agency staff
We thank you in advance and appreciate your support in gathering feedback from these groups.
Your expertise is critical to this process and we know your time is valuable. Thank you sincerely for your time and consideration. If you have any questions, please contact mde.testing@state.mn.us.
