Proviso East Lunch Bunch Program Promotes Health and Wellness
MAYWOOD, IL — The Lunch Bunch program at Proviso East High School, managed by the Loyola University Chicago School-Based Health Center, is empowering students to make healthier lifestyle choices. This free program, led by registered dietitian Arden Baldinger, provides an engaging environment where students can explore nutritious food options, discuss wellness topics, and learn about the impacts of unequal access to food and healthcare services.
The Lunch Bunch program, which meets three times a week, introduces students to healthy dishes from their own cultures and beyond, aligns lessons with the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and fosters a sense of community. Loyola University students and staff collaborate with Proviso East students to create a supportive atmosphere while addressing important societal issues.
“These lessons encourage students to imagine a bright future and take steps toward achieving their goals,” said Baldinger. “It's important to make healthy choices, and hopefully these students are using their voice to tell their friends about what they're learning.”
This week, Proviso’s new superintendent, Krish Mohip, visited the program during a session focused on body positivity. "This was a fantastic opportunity, and I’m grateful to have shared this experience with the kids. A heartfelt thank you to our partners at Loyola for their support and involvement!" Mohip shared. The group discussed how societal pressures and biases impact self-perception and the harm eating disorders inflict on physical and mental health. Students and staff enjoyed a healthy lunch of chicken teriyaki while participating in the engaging conversation.
Proviso East senior Alexandra Sanchez-Lopez appreciates the program’s holistic approach to wellness. “We get to talk about healthy topics like wellness but also we get to talk about having healthy relationships,” she said. Reflecting on how the program has influenced her habits, Sanchez-Lopez added, “More than anything, there’s options for healthy foods and they don’t have to be boring!”
In addition to promoting wellness among students, the Lunch Bunch program raises awareness about disparities in access to food and healthcare, encouraging participants to brainstorm solutions that foster equity. The ultimate goal is to expand the program across the district to other Proviso schools and to include staff, ensuring its positive impact reaches even more people.
Students interested in joining the Lunch Bunch can sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis. With its blend of education, cultural exploration, and advocacy, the program is shaping a healthier, more informed generation at Proviso East High School.
