Parents,

Does your child ride the We Go bus? Do they have a bus pass (student ID)? If you are not sure if your child has their bus pass (student ID), please check with them.

Starting March 1st, if your child does not have their bus pass (student ID) to ride the We Go bus, they will not be allowed to ride unless they can pay for their ride. There is a $2.00 daily pass. There is also a $1.00 one way pass. If you need to order a bus pass (student ID), please see Mrs. Spielberg or Ms. Vasser in the guidance office to replace your bus pass (student ID). Please know there is a $15.00 fee to replace a lost student bus pass (student ID). It also takes several days for the order to be processed and sent to the school.

If you do not have your bus pass (student ID), please be prepared to pay to ride the We Go bus starting March 1st. In addition, please know there will be no exceptions for a student to ride the bus.

The program was hosted by senior Amaya Henderson and junior Delali Amenyenu and entitled, “What Has Dr. King Missed?" A Celebration of Black Excellence from 1970-2023,” this year’s Black History Month program honored African Americans’ achievements in music, fashion, and activism in the decades since Dr. King’s death. The celebration of each decade included an overview video created completely by MLK students and live performances by MLK students. The program was produced by the MLK Black Student Union and conceived and directed by Ms. Avril Syes and Mr. Christopher Dowlen.

He is the TSSAA Coach of the Year for 10-AAA Basketball for 2022-2023! Congratulations!

They are now in the city tournament. The boys won their game Wednesday night (Feb. 23) against Oliver Middle School in overtime and will play again Thursday night, (Feb. 24) against West End in the City Championship. Let's go Royals!!!

The MLK girls' basketball team and cheerleaders participated in a pre-game fellowship at Belmont University on Wednesday night. After listening to student athletes from various sports share their college experiences, they showed spirit in the stands as the Bruins rallied to win against Indiana State by one point in the final seconds of the game.

Jan 1- Feb 26 $55.00 (plus service fee)

Feb 27-Mar 3 $65.00 (plus service fee)

If a student wishes to bring a freshman or sophomore, they must buy their ticket. Freshmen and sophomores are not allowed to purchase a ticket to prom.

All MLK students must fill out a Prom Expectations Form. This year the form is digital. By clicking "I agree" on the form, parents, students, and non-MLK guests agree to adhere to the prom behavior expectations. This form must be completed by March 20, 2023. If you do not complete the form, you will not be able to attend prom. Use the QR code or the link below to access the form.

• Monday, Feb. 27 - "Drop Everything and FAFSA" Day - 8:00 am - 3:00 pm - College Center - Seniors who have not completed their FAFSA will be asked to come to the College Center during their PLT (study hall) to complete this important document. Parents are encouraged to join us in-person or virtually. Parents ~ please remember that Wednesday, March 1 (this Wednesday) is the deadline to complete the FAFSA for TN Promise eligibility. In addition, colleges will not process students' financial aid packages until the FAFSA is received. Please let us help you get it completed before this week's deadline!

Hello, my name is Jim Davis. I am the Aquatics Director at the Margaret Maddox Family YMCA in East Nashville. In past years we have experienced great success recruiting lifeguard staff from Martin Luther King Jr. High School.

Our goal is to work with students to balance work, school, and life. Our operating hours allow us to offer a wide variety of work schedules for those who wish to work after school or on the weekends, or both. Students can nearly always find time between stints on the lifeguard stand and normal operational tasks to study or complete class work.

We offer free hands on Leadership Training. Some of our free trainings with employment include: Lifeguard Training, Swim Instructor Training, Certified Pool Operator, and Living Our Cause. Over my 10+ years working for the YMCA I’ve found the skills learned/used as a lifeguard often apply to real life situations outside of work.

We offer competitive pay and take into consideration Leadership Experience gained at school when applying for Leadership positions.

The Mayor Youth Council (MYC) will be hosting an open house on March 6 from 4:45-6:00 p.m. at the Oasis Center (1704 Charlotte Avenue, Suite, 200), which is a wonderful chance to meet with the current MYC, learn more about what it’s like to be on the council, and gain some insight into the process of joining the MYC.

The WeGo Youth Action Team is composed of high school students from various schools around Nashville. They partner with city leaders to improve the Nashville public transportation system while promoting youth ridership.

The application for the next cohort of WeGo Youth Action Team is open and the deadline is March 17. This is a paid opportunity and will increase students’ leadership and communication skills.

Beginning on Monday, Feb. 6, MNPS will host a series of four webinars that will help prepare students for the ACT. Each week's session will provide strategies that align with a specific subject subtest. The target audience is juniors preparing for the March state-funded ACT test, but all students are welcome. Dates, times, and registration links are available on the ACT page of the MNPS website. Real-time Spanish translation is available as well.

Southern Word is partnering with Urban Word to launch the Tennessee Youth Poet Laureate program. Over the past fifteen years, Southern Word has worked with youth across the state to develop the spaces and skills for them to share their story. As part of that journey, Southern Word has lead the effort to identify Nashville youth voices as part of the Nashville Youth Poet Laureate program for the past nine years. We have seen Nashville Yout Poet Laureates represent young people in front of thousands of Nashvillians, council members, mayors, and other policymakers as well as national civil rights leaders and award-winning authors. They've published books, posted spoken word videos, appeared at the Library of Congress, and released spoken word albums. We want to ensure that all Tennessee teens are given the same opportunity to have their voice heard.

Today, we are excited to announce the application for youth across the state to serve as the first-ever Tennessee Youth Poet Laureate. The Youth Poet Laureate program celebrates our nation’s top youth poets who are committed to artistic excellence, civic engagement, and social impact. Teen writers (ages 13-19) interested must submit a portfolio of their original poetry and a CV that showcases their artistic excellence and community impact. The Tennessee Youth Poet Laureate will represent youth voice across the state.

The 2023-24 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened on Oct. 1 for current seniors who will begin college in the Fall of 2023. Some states and schools have limited funds, so we do not want students to delay; the sooner it is completed, the better!

Additionally, for TN Promise eligibility, the application MUST be completed and submitted by March 1. The application and more information can be found here.

A Note about grades: Parents are encouraged to monitor their students' grades using Schoology or Infinite Campus. Schoology is the best place to look for grades because it is updated more often, and it is the only place where you can see materials and assignments. Teachers will transfer grades from Schoology to Campus at least twice a week. Grades for each quarter are finalized officially in Infinite Campus at the end of the nine weeks. Infinite Campus rounds grades using a different number of decimal places, so you might notice a discrepancy of 0.01% between Campus and Schoology. The final grade in Infinite Campus is the OFFICIAL grade.

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), and is now active across the United States.

When you call, text, or chat 988, you will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting you, provide support, and connect you to resources if necessary.

The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.
