From School Administration
Thank you to all our parents and families who attended conferences last week. We truly appreciate your partnership! We want to take a moment to show appreciation to our fantastic PTA for the yummy dinner provided on Monday, November 25th. Most of our staff worked very long 11-hour days on Monday and Tuesday so they could spend some time with parents discussing student learning progress. This dinner allowed our teachers to offer more conference windows for parents to meet with them.
In addition, as we are fully moving into cold weather season, we wanted to remind you that students will still be going outside for recess. Please make sure you send your child to school with warm clothes. All clothing needs to be labeled with your child's name to prevent it from being lost.
Below you will find HCPSS criteria we consider when having outdoor activities:
• Temperature and humidity
• Wind chill
• Heat index and air quality
• Age of students
• Length of time outdoors
• Adequacy of the children’s clothing
• Condition of the playground
• Falling precipitation (more than a sprinkle or mist)
• Thunder and lightning
Generally, it is assumed that students will be outside for recess, physical education, or any other outdoor activity when the temperature combined with the wind chill is not less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit or the heat index reading is less than 95. We appreciate your help to ensure all our students stay healthy and safe!
Stay warm and have a wonderful weekend!
Debra Anoff, Principal
Bradley Scobie, Assistant Principal

Dear Lisbon Community,
I would like to take this opportunity to share that our outstanding school nurse, Mrs. Joanne O'Keefe, has made the exciting decision to retire! We want to thank Mrs. O'Keefe for being 100% committed to the Lisbon students, staff, and families throughout her two and a half years serving our school community, and wish her well in the next chapter of her life. Message from Mrs. O'Keefe
Dear Lisbon Families,
It has been such an honor and pleasure to work with you for the past 2 and half years, but the time has come for me to retire. My husband and I are building a home near Wilmington, NC that will be finished in January, so my last day at Lisbon will be Friday, December 20th.
I have enjoyed getting to know so many of you and your children have been an absolute pleasure! It was truly a blessing for me to finish out my nursing career at such a wonderful school with an amazing school community!
I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy Holiday season !
Love,
Joanne OKeefe, RN, School Nurse

The Hour of Code is Here!
The Hour of Code is a global initiative designed to introduce people, especially students, to the basics of computer programming and coding. The goal is to demystify computer science and encourage students to develop an interest in technology, as well as to promote coding as a skill for all people, regardless of age or background.
HCPSS believes in teaching computational thinking starting in Kindergarten. Outside of Hour of Code, Students in grades K & 1 have already been introduced to coding this year using our Bee-Bot robots. 2nd grade is currently working with Scratch Jr to code some of their original ideas. 3rd graders have been using the programming language, Blockly, over the past month to program Dash robots to complete various puzzles and tasks. 4th and 5th grade students have recently begun working in CS First, which is similar to Scratch, and will continue to use this program to create puzzles and stories throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarter.
We are excited to join students around the world next week by participating in the Hour of Code. The Hour of Code takes place during Computer Science Education Week, which runs from December 9th-15th this year, and is supported by many organizations, including Code.org, which provides free online coding tutorials for people of all ages. The event features tutorials in popular programming languages like Scratch, JavaScript, Python, and others, using interactive, gamified methods.
By participating in the Hour of Code, Lisbon Elementary School is making a statement that we are ready to introduce these foundational 21st-century skills even to our youngest learners. During our Hour of Code every student at Lisbon Elementary will be given the opportunity to learn, try and enhance their coding skills.
Look for more information about Hour of Code and coding resources you can use at home next week in an announcement from your child's Technology Course. You can find out more information about the Hour of Code by visiting this link: Hour of Code: Code.org

Information Worth Repeating
Ravens Play60 Challenge
LES will be participating in the Baltimore Ravens Play60 Challenge. The challenge will run from December 2nd through December 15th. The goal of the challenge is to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Your minutes can include PE class, recess, and any after school activity. A log will be sent home for you to track your daily activity minutes. A parent or guardian must sign the log before you return it to your homeroom teacher.
If you turn in a form by December 17th, your name will be entered into a raffle to win Ravens swag (water bottles, towels, lanyards, jump rope, headbands, and little footballs). In addition, four students will be chosen to represent our school as Ravens Play60 Challenge ambassadors. Ambassadors will have the chance to win Ravens tickets for themselves and one adult.
We look forward to hearing about all the ways you are choosing to be active each day!
Golden Lion Week
From December 9th-13th, the Lisbon Community will be celebrating Golden Lion Week!
Each day, students who choose to display the days’ desired behaviors, will have the opportunity to earn golden coupons. Each earned golden coupon will be placed in a grade level bucket. At the end of the day, 5 students, from each grade level, will be awarded a Golden Lion Award, get their picture taken, and be displayed on one of the hallway bulletin boards. Students will also receive a Golden Lion swag necklace to keep! Families are encouraged to remind their students of each days’ desired behaviors.
We look forward to congratulating all of our Golden Lions!
