BASD Veteran Honored with Quilt of Valor
Submitted by Mrs. Ziegler, NHUF Administrative Assistant
Rod Norman, courier for BASD, was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Mrs. Bonnie Coughlin on behalf of the Quilts of Valor Foundation. The Mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Mrs. Coughlin is the grandmother of one of NHUF’s students.
When presenting the quilts, they capture pictures of the veterans wrapped in them. The Quilt of Valor is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand-quilted. It says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.” The quilt must be a specific size, have a label with the required information, be awarded (it is not a gift), and be recorded.

MSW Explores the Congressional Medal of Honor
Submitted by Mrs. Kujat, MSW American History Teacher
Classrooms across MSW were given the opportunity to explore the Congressional Medal of Honor by selecting a video featuring a medal recipient. Students were then asked to answer the following question: The six core values of the Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient are courage, sacrifice, patriotism, citizenship, integrity, and commitment. After watching the video, pick one of the six traits and explain how the recipient demonstrated that core value.

A Glimpse Inside Our Classrooms on Veterans Day
Under the guidance of Mr. Danner (BASH Social Studies Teacher) and Mr. Cherkasky (BASH Telecom Teacher), Giancarlo Gargano, an 11th-grader at BASH, created a video shown in BASH Social Studies classrooms today. The video features the Liberty Warbirds Association out of Lancaster and shares the history of the Huey Helicopter and its role in the Vietnam War. It is incredible!
Congratulations to Giancarlo, Evan Deegan, and Thomas Gibbins for their fantastic work!!

A Look Back: The First Bell
Written by Mr. Cherkasky, BASH Telecom Teacher
In 1862, Boyertown’s first public school building was built on South Chestnut Street. This two-story, two-room grammar school, which became known as the Chestnut Street School, was expanded to four rooms in 1876 so that high school classes could be taught there along with grammar school.
Ten years later, a bell and belfry were added to the top of the Chestnut Street School. The 250-pound bell was cast by the McShane Bell Foundry in Baltimore, Maryland for a cost of 67 dollars.
In 1898, Boyertown built a new school on Washington Street to teach grammar and high school students. This school became known as the Washington School, and the district moved the Chestnut Street School bell to this new building in 1899. The district eventually sold the Chestnut Street School in 1910 and it was demolished to build three houses.
The bell remained at the Washington School until 1955 when it was removed due to structural issues. The bell was then put in storage in the basement of Boyertown High School on 4th Street. The bell sat forgotten for over 20 years until members of the Boyertown Class of 1932 discussed the bell at their 50th class reunion. A proposal to restore and rededicate the bell was approved by their class, and they committed $1500 towards the project. After working with the school district, it was decided to build a miniature belfry in the courtyard of Boyertown Elementary School to house the bell. The bell was rededicated on September 19th, 1987, just in time for the class of 32’s 55th class reunion.
The 138-year-old bell is still located in the courtyard of Boyertown Elementary School and is the district’s only remaining artifact from its original school building. If you ever get the chance to visit Boyertown Elementary School, be sure to walk past the courtyard to glance at this piece of Boyertown History.
