Nov. Week 2: What do living things need to survive and thrive? (Yeast Investigations)
Observation: I get hungry, thirsty, cold (or hot), and when I go swimming, I can only hold my breath for so long before I need to come up for air! Living things need things to survive.
Question: What can help a living thing survive?
Materials:
Packages of yeast (in the baking aisle), try to get all the same type of yeast.
Water (ice water, room temperature, warm, hot)
Sweeteners (options: sugar, stevia, honey, agave, nutrasweet, etc.)
Exploration & Categorization:
Take a moment to review from last week.
As a living thing, what helps the yeast best grow & thrive?
Explanation: (for younger students)
Yeast are tiny little 1 celled organisms (too small to see with your eyes). They are able to shut down if they don’t have what they need, but they activate when they are given what they need.
Results: Take a picture of your table and submit it to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Reflection: What did you learn?
